OCR FOREWORD
South Shields Football Club consider it a great honour and privilege to have the foreword for this brochure written by Sir Stanley Matthews , C.B.E. , following his recent visit to our club .
VALE PARK , BURSLAM , STOKE . May , 1966 .
Two months ago I visited South Shields Football Club and was tremendously impressed with their facilities , atten dances and general all - round potential . They are a sound , go - ahead club with an ambitious and enterprising Board of Directors and a thriving Supporters ' Club .
They own their ground - covering sixteen acres which is also equipped with League - style floodlighting , and they command solid support from South Shields which has a population of more than 110,000 . Indeed , their average attendances are bigger than some League clubs and would , I am confident , increase greatly were they admitted into the Football League .
I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending their application for membership of the Football League . I feel they deserve League status and would be a credit to the competition .

...
We are confident in every way that our club could main tain the high standards of integrity and sportsmanship demanded by the Football League and we feel we possess a vigorous , ambitious all - round club that would be a credit to the League .
Naturally , we own our ground which covers an area of 16 acres . Our ground has a spectator - capacity of 25,000 , is well appointed as far as transport is concerned and even more improvements are scheduled this close season . The ground is , of course , fully equipped with modern League style floodlights .
We have great support from our town , which has a population of more than 110,000 , and we feel it would be far greater were we members of the Football League . In the last month of the season just ended , we twice had atten
