The South Shields St. Peter and Paul's Church rugby football club pictured in 1898 , when the Durham junior champions . Affiliated to the church which was on Westoe Road just before the bridges . Far left is secretary Jack Tinn , who then lived in Broughton Road . He began to follow the soccer code with South Shields Adelaide AFC some few years later and eventually was appointed team manager when it was elected to the Football League in 1919 , having been much involved in canvassing nation wide for votes . He left the club in 1927 on his appointment as manager to Portsmouth FC where he remained for over 20 years .
