OCR In 1892 Boldon ' Star ' were one of 11 teams who formed the inaugural Wearside League , they later became known more famously as Boldon ' Villa ' .
It was in 1934 when Charlton Athletic signed the ' Villa ' keeper Sam Bartram . Bartram was better known for his skills as a wing - half , but whilst playing for North Shields in the same forward line as his uncle , he scored 33 goals in 25 games at centre forward .
However , aged just 20 , whilst standing in for Boldon's injured keeper in the South Tyne Alliance Cup , he was spotted by the
brother of Charlton's manager Jimmy Seed .
Sam Bartram went on to have an unbelievably successful career , playing as first choice keeper for 22 seasons , and accumulating 623 first team appearances in all competitions , and is still regarded as a Charlton Athletic club Legend
He was joined by another ' Villa ' player at Charlton , when 17 year old full back Jack Shreeve signed just 4 months after Bartram . The pair paraded the F.A. Cup around Boldon in 1947 after playing Sunderland at Roker Park .
This link to ' Boldon ' was acknowledged when Charlton Athletic donated a signed goalkeepers top , in 2008 , which still hangs in the clubhouse .
Another link to Bartram came when York City , another of Bartram's clubs , played in a friendly in 2011 to officially switch on the clubs new floodlights at The Welfare Ground .
