Known as Peter Pan ' . Info Jim Creasy . By HORSLEY WHO would like to win an overcoat every time a Shields forward scored two goals ? That was a popular idea when Peter Howe played for the old Shields Adelaide - and he took full advant age of it . In fact Peter collected 38 overcoats and à suit one season , nearly sufficient clothes to set up a tailor's shop . The tailor who offered an overcoat to the Adelaide players every time they scored two goals must have rued the offer when Peter got going . PETER MORTIMER HOVE . Spectators Too SPECTATORS too in those days could win overcoats and suits . All they had to do was to support the home side regularly and wait patiently for one of the home lads to score two goals . Then , if they caught the tailor's eye , an overcoat or suit was theirs for keeps .. There were two Howes , Peter and Joe . Peter Howe was older than his brother Joe , but the day arrived when they treated Shields spectators to some grand football while partners on the South Shields Parkside left wing . Peter first tasted football as a schoolboy with Har ton Schoolboys . He was an inside - left and following his schooldays played for Harton Star and Harton Old Boys . His play attracted the bigger clubs and Peter signed for Kingston Villa then in the Wearside League . 1884South Shields . Then came a long journey to Reading , a team he played for in the Southern League , and later he went to Hull City , where he was captain for four seasons . height 5'7 " , weight 12stones 5lbs . Came Back LIKE many other professional footballers . Peter travelled back to the town which had given him his chance . South Shields Adelaide was the fortunate club , and he played for them in the Northern Alliance League and North - Eastern League . Only one medal in the county evaded Peter's grasp , a Northern Alliance medal , and this he left for brother Joe to obtain . Joe did this with Ashington in 1913-14 . Ashington had a grand sea son that year , winning the Northum berland Senior Cup and the Aged Miners ' Cup .. Joe was an outside - left and began his career with Park Villa , later sign ing for Harton Colliery . When brother Peter signed for Parkside , Joe was asked to join them and the two brothers formed Parkside's left wing . Tommy Curry A MEMBER of the Parkside team at that time was Tommy Curry , who was later to become famous as a Newcastle United player . Joe was a sportsman of all round ability and delighted crowds with his cricket performances . He first played for Harton Colliery and , then South Shields . He took part in Shields ' first John Saunders ' Cup game , played in those days to a time limit of one and a half hours per innings . His cricket record would not be complete without mentioning that he played in the Third Battalion .D.L.I . team in 1918 which won the British Army Cricket championship . |
