Career : West Stanley , York City ( June 1948 ) South Shields ( June 1951 ) .
Notes : Tom Thumb winger George Ivey grew in stature on his City debut , scoring twice in a sensational 6-0 win over Carlisle . George stood just 5ft 5in and was recruited from West Stanley , a club from whom City picked up several players in the years after the War . One newspaper report described him as " a box of tricks and has a rare football instinct for bobbing up in the least expected place to get opportunist goals " . George's ability to play on either wing made him a valuable - and popular asset . He later gave excellent service to South Shields , playing against City in the second round of the FA Cup
in 1956 .
