Nobody would think of addressing him & " Charles . " He gets nothing but " Charlie " from all his footballing friends , and the crowd know him by no other name . John sotis & Shieldsman by birth , but it was the north side bumngh on which he bestowed the honour of selection as his birthplace . Had he but known where his future fame was to be made he would without a doubt have come to South Shields to be born in : Having made his selection , however , Charlie has been loyal to the town of his nativity in one respect at least , inasmuch as he has there settled down in a nice little business which he tends in the intervals of playing and training for football .
To a Shieldsman it were utter supereroga tiou to describe at any length Johnson's fine qualities as a footballer , and as a full back in particular . It is something like a decade sinc he entered first class football , and to day he is as good as ever he was - and perhaps better Without exception , there is no more consistent and reliable player in the South Shields club . A more able full back has never appeared in the club's uniform . He always displays great judgment in his clear andes , and is not one of those defenders who simply meko & big kick without any regard as - te where they are placing the ball .

In the next season he was put into the first team and during the rest of his stay with Sheffield appeared regularly in the team at lef - back , the famous Benson being his partner . While he was with them Shef field never had the distinction of finishing higher than the third position in the League table but twice they occupied that high niche .

Then for a season he went to Jarrow as player - manager of the Caledonians club , but in the latter part of last season he was induced to return to the Horsley Hill fold and has remained there since . He has turned out in every match the first team has played this season with the one exception and the match at Carlisle when he was not well enough to play .
He has several medals as mementoes of his playing career , including those won in con . nection with the Sheffield Cup , Midland League , Northern Alliance , and Durbam Senior Cup , which latter trophy South Shields won in 1911. While with Sheffield he took part in the one match between teams repre senting Sheffeid and Glasgow and was one of the recipients of the presentation cape . He has been exceedingly fortunate through
