From his earliest days with Waterhouses Schoolboys in 1913-14 he had been a very robust and keen centre - half . He was one of only eleven players to play for South Shields and Gateshead in 1930 , when the latter club took over Shields and moved to Redheugh Park . 1929-30 was his best season , his 7 Football League appearances concluding with 5 consecutive games without defeat , whilst he scored his only Football League goal in a 1-1 draw at Wigan Borough . At Southport he broke his collar - bone in the opening Lancashire Combination game at Lancaster Town and was sidelined for two months . He later became a permit player with various works teams and was trainer to Chatham Town in 1947-48 while George Pateman ( q.v. ) was manager . Having been a sheet metal worker at Shorts before the war , he worked as a groundsman at Wingets up to his retirement and became a bowls fanatic . He died very suddenly of a heart attack - just three weeks short of what would have been his golden wedding - at his home in Kent where he had settled in the mid - 1930s . LITTLEWOOD . By " WANDERER . " Alf . Littlewood , who went to Lincoln to - day as reserve to the South Shields League teau , has been very much in the " limelight " this season in spite of the fact that his activities have so far been confined to North Eastern League football . He has been one of the out standing men in the ranks of the Reserves and had it not been for the consistently good forin displayed by the present intermediate trio he would have earned promotion long ago . Littlewood is a prodigious worker , and though he never spares himself throughout the ninety minutes he can always stay the distance . A keen and clean tackler , his splendid breaking - up tactics have proved of inestimable value to his side in many a hard game . [ Fhoto : H Hamilton . So. Shields . A native of Eshwinning , Littlewood first came into prominence with Tow Law North ern League team in which he had Maycock 48 a clubmate . He signèd an amateur form for South Shields on March 27th and became a professional a few weeks later . Centre - half is the position in which he is seen to the greatest advantage , but he is capable of adapting himself to either of the wing places . He is 5ft . 7in . in height , and turns the scale at 11 stones . |
