Sept 20 1913 . KICKLETS . ASSOCIATION . South Shields Have risen to the top of the North - Eastern League chart this week . Their record is seven points for four games . They are decidedly better off than their opponents of to - day , for Darlington have played five matches for six points . Of course it was quite on the cards that to day's match at Darlington would put the " Quakers " at the top . But don't tell us that it is so ! Prior to to - day's matches six of the 20 N.E.L. clubs had been unbeaten . Only three had not dropped a single point . They were Newcastle Reserves , Newcastle City , and Shildon . Last season's champions have not made so brilliant a start this term . Dropping four points in five games isn't going to land them at the top of the tree at the end of April next . A supporter of the South Shields club . writes to us complaining that at the Horsley Hill ground last Saturday he was unable to get a pass out check at half - time , though he , along with many others , applied at three different gates . Eventually he climbed the fence . Perhaps if the directors ' attention is , drawn to the matter it will be remedied for the future . The great proceedings at Horsley Hill last Saturday went off all right . There was the season's record attendance up - to - date - between eight and nine thousand . We wouldn't like to hurt anybody's feel ings in the least . But that procession was really a very weak affair : If it hadn't been for the band , three or four pressmen , and a " Gazette " messenger boy , who seemed to be lost ; and who brought up the rear , there would hardly have been any procession at all . The principals for the most part seemed to feel their position most acutely . They appeared to be horribly conscious that they were the cynosure of some 16,000 optics . Ah ! We recollect having seen a one - eyed man amongst the crowd . That brings the total down to 15,999 net . We daresay it was a wee bit uncomfort able for the directors and their friends in they are really modest the " oires , " for after all folk . However , they were martyrs in a good cause . The procession would have been more im pceing had the players of both teams been in cluded . Not the least enjoyable part of the pro ceedings was the music played by the Har tor : Colliery Band . The ragtime went exceedingly well . Might it not be a good idea to have a band at all the home N.E.L. matches ? What was the South Shields Reserve team doing last week to lose so badly to Corlodge ? With half a North - Eastern League team ou , too ! d 19 Tites |
