Has been with Shields all his senior career , and was converted from a wing - half by Alf McMichael shortly after the ex - Irish international took over at Simonside . * * OMMY PIGFORD ( right half ) : Several League clubs have been after his signa ture but he prefers to stay at Shields . A good footballer , he won a regular first team place when club skipper Bobby Ewell had an operation last term . He is far too good a player for the reserves , but Shields have an embarrass ment of half - back talent . * BILLY TODD ( half - back ) : Billy has played most of his football in the reserve team because of Shields ' middle line strength - but he's an extremely capable footballer who can be drafted into the first team with complete con fidence . Played in two F.A. Cup - ties last term and scored in one . * * RONNIE RUTHERFORD ( centre - half ) : One of non League football's outstand ing pivots . Had spells with Newcastle and Blyth Spartans before moving to Simonside two seasons ago . Fast and nippy , he's only 19 and could well prove Colchester were wrong to let him go . * JIM POTTER ( wing - half or inside forward ) : Joined Shields last season fromh Irish club Linfield . Was on Sunderland's books for a spell . Has not shown his true form at Simonside but had a long lay - off before Joining Shields and is u doubtedly a good player Sth . Shields 6 , Carlisle Res . O UNBEATEN South Shields kept their lead at the top of the table with this runaway victory . 8 Star of the match was inside left Gerry Donoghue who netted two of their goals before being carried off injured shortly before the end . Carlisle held out for the first 20 minutes but then Smith scored hotly disputed penalty after left half Foord was adjudged to have handled . It wasn't until five minutes before half - time that Shields scored again with a tremendous shot by Norman Cardew . But after the interval Carlisle's defence collapsed . Billy Robinson made 3-0 .
