1947 RAF STATION TEAM IDADE sday , January 24 2002 Cookson Country with Janis Blower You can e - mail Janis at : cookson.country@northeast-press.co.uk Going for promotion in more ways than one THE news that consultants have been brought in to try to improve the image of South Tyneside is intriguing . It seems that one of the first things they've picked up on is that we're not very good at pro moting our best features - places like the college in South Shields whose marine department is famous around the world . Really , though , there are all kinds of things that could be given a much higher profile than they currently enjoy . There's the lifeboat for a start . In the days of the old South Shields Borough Council , the pride of the town as the birth place of the first working life boat was reflected everywhere you looked . The town badge , with its depiction of the lifeboat , was on everything : our exercise books at school , the sides of buses , school blazers , corporation dustcarts *** Then when we were absorbed into the new borough of South Tyneside , it all slipped away and we make little or nothing now of the truly massive con tribution which the town made to the saving of life at sea . I'm reminded of all this by the badge being worn by these lads . Gazette online : www.southtynesidetoday.co.uk . No one over a certain age could mistake it : the little boat with its half - dozen rowers bob bing about on a sea of wavy lines : This lovely picture has come to me from a reader , Mrs Hus twith , in Lowry Gardens , Shields . Her brother John ( Jackie ) Ford is the chap in the front row holding the football between his feet . The team was South Shields Ex - Schoolboys , although it's uncertain when the photograph was taken . I am sure that there must be someone out there who can tell us more about the team and identify the other players . I imagine , though , that the side had its roots in the golden era of schoolboy soccer which existed in Shields on either side . of the First World War . 3 uncertain . 1946-47 19 251 ON THE BALL ... South Shields Ex - Schoolboys ' football side - though the date of the picture is 54 the line sately o The Grimsby forwards got away in a good passing move ment which made the Gates head defence fall back on Gray , who had the ball covered all the way until it passed outside the upright , Grimsby were quickly back on the attack , and Gateshead's defence took a rare shaking . Johnston was hurt in deflecting the ball from Ingham's attempt When the ball came in from the corner kick there was a scene of wild activity , but FINAL : MacMillan got it well clear . WILBERT scored for Gates head in the 81st minute . to shoot . |
