Last night West Stanley dropped what may prove to be the vital point when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by South Shields , while North Shields drew another point ahead by virtue of a 3-1 win at Ashington .
Thus the only decision made last night was that the title will change hands for champions . Middlesbrough Reserves . , cannot now overtake North Shields . Neither of the aspirants , incidentally , has ever won the title .
Table to date is :

Anything less than a 3-0 win makes North Shields title holders .
Fraction may decide
The " Robins " have the better goal average at the moment ( 94-59 ) com pared with Stanley's 64-44 , but a 0-3 defeat would permit Stanley to average 1.52 to Shields 1.51 . West Stanley 1 , South Shields 1 . West Stanley . hefore the biggest crowd of the season ( 3,050 ) , frittered away early chances at Murray Park . The home team went ahead through McLean despite the forceful tactics of Shields , but just before the interval , Gibbins equalised after Travis miskicked in the goal area .
In the second half , with the visitors penned in their own half for 30 minutes . it was veteran centre half Hewison and goalkeeper Wilson versus Stanley . But for the home team would surely have scored .

Architect of the win was ex - Ashington will - o ' - the - wisp . d . whose side flicks , cross - field passes , and short dashes kept the visiting forward line in top gear throughout .
His goal , North Shields ' third , came just after the interval , and was the result of brilliant opportunism .
Running from the centre spot he accepted a through pass to beat the hitherto unbeaten Ashington offside trap and coolly shot past the advancing Charlton .
The visitors ' two goals in the first half were rather fortunate , though none the less deserved . The first , after four minutes , as scored by full - back Cockburn , who lobbed in to the Ashington goalmouth , for Charlton to mishandle in the face of the sun . The second was scored by Johnson , a hard - working inside left , who snapped up a loose clearance .
There was not a weak link in the North Shields side . They were quicker on the ball and stronger and far cooler in defence , where Dudgeon , though occasionally puzzled by Luke's unorthodoxy , dominated .
Dawson could not be faulted , for the goal scored against him by Dent was shot through a crowd of players .
