74 Mariners miss Compton and go down 4-2 Facing a weakened Shields defence , Morpeth attacked like furies straight from the kick - off hoping to catch Shields " cold " and grab vital early goals . SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners , beaten 4-2 away by Morpeth Town in Saturday's Northern Alliance game , still emerged with credit against last sea son's championship runners - up and league cup Mariners were overwhelmed finalists , writes a special in the first half during which correspondent . they conceded four goals . BETTER SIDE Stewart , after three minutes , and McNally two minutes later scored to give Morpeth an early 2-0 lead , both goals coming after Mari ners goalkeeper Dick Patter son could only parry shots . forward Centre Jimmy Robson scored to reduce the Mariners ' deficit in the tenth minute but further goals by Smith , direct from a corner , and McNally put Morpeth well in command . In the second half the Mariners settled down and looked a much better side . Steve Hunter and Robson both went close to scoring , before Billy Graham scored a good goal from outside the penalty area . The absence through injury of centre half and de fensive strong man Jimmy Compton had a marked effect on the Mariners ' back four , his height and strength being sorely missed . The result was that the Shields man of the match : BILLY GRAHAM . The Mariners line - up was : Patterson ; Wardale , Ruth erford ; McDonald , McFar lane , Graham ; Young , Sug gett , Johnstone , Robson , Hunter . Sub . Madden . TRANKRENE Champions crash to Mariners 1-0 SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners produced a magnificent team performance at Wallsend last night to beat Marine Park , Northern Alliance championship and League Cup winners , in each of the last two seasons , 1-0 , writes Dick two - point goal if ever there Kirkup . Marine Park , beaten only nine times in Alliance matches in the last two seasons , opened this season with a 3-1 win but Shields were their masters last night . Shields , who meet League leaders Workington Reserves at Cleadon Recreation Ground on Saturday ( 3.0 p.m. ) grabbed a 14th minute lead and might had added three further goals in the second half . GREAT GOAL The goal that decided this hard - fought game was a matchwinner of the highest quality , scored by Alan Sug gett , brother of ex - Sunder land player Colin . Alan col lected a precision throw by goalkeeper Dick Patterson deep in his own half in the inside left position . He picked his way upfield , strikers Jimmy Robson run ning to the left and Eric Johnstone to the right pul ling defenders away and creating a path for Suggett who beat two men before scoring with a 15 - yard cross shot , the ball flashing into the net off the far post . It was a beauty , a genuine was one . Johnstone sliced wide after another Suggett run , Robson had a great shot brilliantly saved and saw , another drift inches wide , Johnstone was again inches off target , and Ray Young hammered a shot wide fol lowing a brave run and cross by Robson . But Shields owed a debt to Patterson who pulled out a glorius 60th minute save , clawing down a fiercely hit free - kick . My man of the match was again a difficult choice , but I finally named centre half Jim McFarlane for a power ful display in a defence that again missed Jimmy Comp ton because of injury .
