In front of a tremendous crowd of over 3,000 , Shields raced into a two - goal lead in side the first nine minutes as Tom Broadbent and Robert Briggs found the net . Warrington - who went into the game on a 22 - match unbeaten run- pulled one back 11 minutes before half time but were second - best as the Mariners underlined why they will end the season top of the Northern Premier League standings . Shields displayed the kind of confidence you would ex pect from a side crowned champions five days earlier , beginning the match at a fre netic pace . They could have scored inside 90 seconds when Jordy Mongoy robbed goal keeper Tony Thompson of possession on the left touch line , but his attempt lacked the conviction required to beat the back - tracking de fenders . Blair Adams saw a shot blocked but the Mariners did find the breakthrough they had been threatening on five minutes . Long - time rivals War rington Town were the final visitors of a remarkable sea son at the 1st Cloud Arena and they were blown away by a stunning opening to the game from Kevin Phillips ' side . There were just five min utes on the clock when Tom Broadbent headed the Mari ners in front after getting on the end of a pinpoint cross from Conor Newton . The lead was soon doubled when Mariners stalwart Rob ert Briggs fired into an empty net after Jordy Mongoy had punished an error of judge ment from visitors goalkeeper Tony Thompson . The Yellows reduced the arrears when Luke Duffy scored before half - time , but that was the end of the scoring as the Mariners cele brated their title triumph with a hard - earned win . Just under 12 months have passed since the Mari ners suffered play - off heart ache against Warrington Town with a defeat that led the Sunderland legend to in sist his side would come back stronger once he had been able to put his own print on his squad . A productive summer that saw the likes of Gary Liddle , Mackenzie Heaney and Tom Broadbent move to the 1st Cloud Arena laid the founda tions for what has been mem orable season as the Mariners secured a place in the Nation al League North at the fourth time of asking . Reflecting on his com ments in the aftermath of the play - off loss against the Yellows , Phillips admitted he always had belief in his own ability and his hopeful he can enjoy further success as his managerial career continues in the years to come .
