JOHNSTONE 10 Shields Gazette , Monday , September 16 , 1974 MARINERS SAY FAREWELL TO CLEADON BY BEATING CHAMPIONS By DICK KIRKUP SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners forged ahead into a four - point lead at the top of the Northern Alli ance on Saturday , but manager Bobby Elwell's comment was : " It wasn't one of our better dis plays , but champions Marine Park came to Cleadon rather defens ively - minded . Shields beat the Wallsend side 1-0 centre forward Jimmy Robson scoring from the penalty spot just after half - time . A Marine Park player was sent off for dis sent after the penalty had been awarded . It was a poor day for Shields ' championship rivals , Percy Main Amateurs losing 2-1 at Bedlington and Alnw ick Town losing 3-2 at home to Wallsend Athletic , but Town Morpeth recovered some ground with a remark able 7-4 win at Alston . Saturday's game was also Shields ' last at Cleadon Recr eation Ground which they were given temporarily until Marsden CW had finished their cricket fixtures at Jack Clark Memorial Park which they rounded off at the weekend . Unsuccessful In future Shields ' home games will be played at the Jack Clark ground and Elwell and his players are a little disappointed at leaving the well - appointed Cleadon ground which has impressed the Northern Alliance offi cials so much . Says Elwell : " Our club ap proached the council in an effort to get Cleadon for the rest of the season but they were unsuccessful . We all think the Cleadon ground is ideal , but at the same time we must be grateful to the Council for giving us the Jack Clark ground in the first place when he had no where to play . " On Saturday we had nearly 400 spectators and I was really pleased with the turn - out , but a lot of them said they wished we had Cleadon as a permanent home ground . " I know the new club have looked longingly at Cleadon but they also appreciate that it is the town's major pitch for schoolboy matches . Yet I know they would have been prepared to put a roof over the Cleadon stand at their own expense had they been allowed the permanent use of it . - A vacancy in As it is , their next three games are all away , and their first match at the Jack Clark Memorfal Park will be on Saturday , October 12 , when they play Wallington . by Elwell concluded saying : " While we are happy the Northern Alliance , there is a vacancy in the Rothman's Northern League , and if we were interested I think we would have an even chance if we had Cleadon . Taking in league and cup games , I doubt if we would play more than 25 home games this season , SO the Cleadon ground would not have been over - played . we were " On Saturday very nearly left in a bit of a hole . We paid our usual early morning check at the ground to make sure everyth ing was in order for the match , but we discovered that someone had been and taken the goal nets away . We realise that whoever took them had a right to them for Fives and Threes Date A meeting of the Would have Fives and Threes League wil be held at the Jolly Steward on Thursday at 7.30 p.m. schoolboy football , but I think they might have given us a ring to tell us . " Fortunately we secured alternative nets , but if we had not gone to the ground until after lunch , we might have been pushed to replace them , and we could have been in trouble with the league if we had had to kick off late . They contributed to their own downfall , failing to make the most of the chances they created . Boldon were the first to score when Car michael hit a great goal in the tenth minute following a corner by Taylor , but Shil don hit back strongly and equalised in the 25th minute through Wegg . In the second half Shildon piled on the pressure and in the 60th minute took the lead through Wegg . Ten minutes later Wegg com pleted his hat - trick . Kir kbride reduced the arrears for Boldon and Taylor had the chance to force a replay in the dying minutes but he shot wide from a good posi tion . |
