" ' NO COMMENT ' ON THE FATE OF ORIGINAL BID FOR HALL When asked about the price the club had re ceived , Mr Leighton said : " I cannot comment on spe cific figures . All I can say is that the figure that has been agreed is substantial . It was an offer the board could not honestly refuse , considering the plans we have for the club . Edmund Hill , then a director of the old South Shields AFC , a club which has no connection with the New South Shields Mari pers , bought Simonside Hall in 1953 at a price said at the time to be between £ 6,000 and £ 7,000 . He charged the club a nominal rent , but in 1960 he sold it for £ 10,000 to the Supporters ' Club who at once presented the ground to the football club saying they were doing so so that senior professional football would never die in the town . Shields Gazette and Shipping Telegraph In recent years the club hoped to return to their former home at Horsley Hill Stadium , but this hope fell through . Last year they approached the coun cil for a site in the town on which to build a new stadium , but again were unsuccessful .
