10 - Shields Gazecce , Monday , September 30 , 1974 Seventh successive win fo M they Mariners - now are six points clear SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners , without three regular first team players , still knew too much for Stockton in Saturday's Northern Alliance away game and ran out 4-0 winners - their seventh successive victory . This pushed the Mariners into a six - point lead at the top of the table , but second top Morpeth Town - the only side to beat Shields this season have two games in hand . But well as Shields are VAT TAKES playing , they might well run this coming when they £ 114m OUT travel to meet Alston , a side lying in fifth position but with three games in hand over the Mariners . In addi tion , Alston are the second highest scorers in the league behind scored 23 goals in their six Shields , having matches , and that is virtually the same ratio of goals per match as Shields have man aged . On Saturday Alston were 1-0 away winners over Seaham RS - and that was the first goal Seaham had conceded at home this season , so Alston pose a con siderable threat to the Mari ners this weekend . OF SOCCER FOOTBALL League clubs handed over £ 13m to the Gov ernment in 1973-74 as a result of VAT . Top of the pay - out table were the First Division clubs with £ 680,000 . Division Two clubs paid £ 313,000 ; Division Three £ 183,000 and Division Four £ 104,000 . The figures are disclosed today by John Smith , secre tary of Leicester City , who led a protest on behalf of all the League clubs when the tax was introduced . " The money has come from supporters ' pockets , " said Mr Smith . " Most clubs , in cluding us , were compelled to put up prices . Yet , our accounts have shown that the £ 31,000 we have paid to the Government was , in fact , our trading loss . " A balance must be found somewhere and we believe that exemption from the tax is the one sure way that we can reckon to keep charges within the reach of the average supporters . " our " There is a solution . It is time for the Government to consider the formation of a Levy Board . With £ 80m raised from betting tax on pools , at least £ 5m should logically be allocated for ground improvements . " ..... However , Elwell added : " At Stockton I took Keith McDonald out of the back four and out him in midfield Shields ' next home game is on Saturday , October 12 , when they receive Walling ton and the game will be played at the Jack Clark Me morial Park . Shields ' home far have been games so years at in place of Alan Suggett and played at Cleadon Recreation Ground due to the Jack Clark Memorial Park being used by Marsden CW Cricket Club . Marsden have now completed their fixtures and the Mariners must leave Cleadon . Note : In their last seven matches , all of which have been won , Shields have scored 27 goals and let in only five . After 38 he did but Keith's the Wembley he retires sort of gifted player who will do a good job almost any where . I also brought Jimmy Compton into the back four and he also had a grand SPORTSMAN Wembley Stadium's gen eral manager , George Stan ton , is retiring at the end of the year after 38 years ' ser vice with the company . SHOULD BE FIT However , Shields ' three ab sentees should all be in Sat urday's line - up . Alan Suggett missed the Stockton game be cause of his best - man duties at a wedding , while strikers Jimmy Robson and Eric Johnstone were out injured . Manager Bobby Elwell played Billy Hair and Steve Hunter as the two main strikers , and they did well , although Elwell conceded : " I thought we lost a bit of our rhythm with three players out , but overall I was pleased with the side's performance . But while these three players will be available for this weekend , we will be without left back Lyn Rutherford , who has now started two weeks ' holiday . " Mr Stanton , when resident engineer , was involved in the planning of the 1948 Olympic Games at Wembley and as executive manager he was be hind the staging of the 1966 World Cup . He became gen eral manager in 1970 . I'll take Boycott's place - Luckhurst Brian Luckhurst , the Kent opening batsman , has accep ted the invitation to take Geoff Boycott's place on the MCC tour of Australia and New Zealand this winter . Luckhurst , just returned from a holiday in Spain , tele phoned Alec Bedser , chair man of the selectors , from his Sittingbourne home to accept the invitation . RUGBY BIRMINGHAM VEGETABLE MARKET REST 2 Larry D South Shields Mariners skipper , Billy Graham , who crowned another fine game at Stockton on Saturday with two goals . 3 match .
