MARINERS SIX POINTS CLEAR
-BUT TITLE RIVALS CAN MAKE IT CLOSE
SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners , with a third of their Northern Alliance programme now behind them , hold a six - point lead at the top of the table but they are still under pressure .
Because of games in hand , several sides could eat into that lead , with second top Alston and Alnwick Town and Morpeth Town very much in the picture .
Shields ' two defeats so far were at Alston and Morpeth , while their first meeting with Alnwick comes this weekend at the Jack Clark Memorial Park when they clash in the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup .
On Saturday Shields open ed their career at the " Jack Clark " with a convincing 4-0 win Wallington , to bring their total of goals so
over
far to 40 in 11 games - sus taining their belief they will top the this season .
Centre forward Jimmy Robson is top scorer with 12 goals , while Ray Young , Sat urday's man of the match , and Steve Hunter each have five , with Billy Graham on four and Ritchie Madden and Alan Suggett on three . Hunter headed Shields in
to a 21st minute lead against Wallington with Robson scor ing from close range two
minutes later to make it 2-0

club in water - because there wasn't any
SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners chairman Mr Martin Ford and secretary Mr lan Joice were meeting Mr Ray Lee , Director of Culture and Leisure Activities , at the Town Hall later today , following an incident at the Jack Clark Memorial Park on Saturday .
ot
Mr Ford explained : " We are seeing Mr Lee to make sure that there is no repeti tion of an incident which humiliated us in the eyes of visiting club Wallington and also Northern Alliance offi cials who were at the game . " He went on : " On Saturday we played our first game at the Jack Clark Memorial Park after opening our season at Cleadon Recreation Ground , due to the Jack Clark ground being required by Marsden Cricket Club .
" Water was heated for the showers after the game , but when the two teams went for their baths the water was clay cold .
' EMBARASSING '
" On another pitch at the ground a junior match was played , and this game fi nished half an hour before ours . Apparently all the junior players who I be lieve are not normally pro vided with showers went
in and used / all the hot water , leaving none for the senior match .
" We had to explain to Wal lington that there wasn't a drop of hot water , and al though they accepted our ex planation and took it in good part , it was embarassing for everybody . Indeed , it was a disgrace .
" We don't want to wield the big stick to junior clubs , but we thought it was a bit much on Saturday .
" We don't deny these junior players a shower , but the Northern Alliance lays down its rules and we must either abide by them or risk
3 losing our membership . It's
e
as serious as that .
" We have had to guarantee that there will be no repti tion of this , for on Saturday we are at home again to Alnwick Town in the North ern Alliance Challenge Cup . " We are hoping that our meeting with Mr Lee will sort the position out . Certain ly it mustn't happen again but we've got to be sure what the conditions are for other sides using the Jack Clark Memorial Park . "
