Rutherford operation
SOUTH Shields Mariners , whose leadership of the Northern Alliance has now been whittled down to two points by Alston , will be without left back Lyn Ruth erford ( above ) for several weeks .
Lyn , a solicitor , has under gone an appendicitis opera tion . Says manager Bobby Elwell : " Lyn was complain ing of stomach pains during training last week , and now his wife has telephoned me to say he was rushed into hospital for an operation . "
Which explains his absence from the Shields side which defeated Parsons 3-2 in a friendly at the Jack Clark Memorial Park on Sat urday . Shields used the game as a tactical work - out , and Elwell was satisfied , although he added : " I'm only hoping we can quickly find the form we showed at Cleadon Recreation Ground . Since we left there , our game has fallen away . "
Eric Johnstone played his first full game since under going a minor operation and celebrated his return with two goals , Billy Graham scor ing the third .
A trialist from Scotland played in attack , but he did not impress .
