DICK KIRKUP'S REPORT OF AN UNFORGETTABLE NIGHT
McCallum bombshell -I'll miss QPR tie
SOUTH SHIELDS left winger , tricky Nicky ago , told me : " We've already changed the McCallum , who spent two seasons at Burnley wedding date once . It was fixed for November straight from school and then played for Darl- 29 , but as my sister was expecting a baby we ington and Kings Lynn from whom he joined decided to postpone the wedding . As it was , the Mariners this season , dropped this bomb- the baby came early . " shell last night : " I'll don't think I'll be able to play in the FA Cup tie against Queen's Park Rangers . "
What are the chances of Nicky postponing the big day a second time ? " Quite honestly , " he said , " I don't think I can . You know all made for a wedding , well , we've done it all the plans and arrangements that have to be and the banns are to be read this week - end . No , I think I'll miss the game in London . "
Reason : Saturday , January 3 - the date for the tie with the Second Division promotion challengers is his WEDDING DAY !
On the way home last night Nicky , who cele brated his 21st birthday less than two weeks
" Don't forget , Queen's Park Rangers haven't a clue who we are or probably where South Shields is . But we know all about them . We'll go up to London with our heads held high , prepared for everything they have to offer . They'll have to be ruddy good to beat us . Our knee won't bend easily . "
Nicky , who lives at Bill Quay , is to be mar ried at Pelaw .
STANDING OVATION FOR SENSATIONAL
MARINERS AFTER 2-1 CUP TRIUMPH
FA CUP second round replay : Oldham Atheltic 1 , South Shields 2 . This handful of words adds up to the Mariners ' finest hour . The moment South Shields Football Club and its supporters have been dreaming of for 40 years ... and at Boundary Park , Oldham , last night the impossible dream proved not to be impossible after all . Let's shout it from the rooftops : South Shields are in the third round of the FA Cup for the very first time as a non - League club ... and although few will give them a chance against Second Division promotion challengers Queen's Park Rangers in London on Saturday , January 3 , the players themselves are on top of the world and they flashed this quip in my direction during last night's celebrations :
*******
…………
That's the spirit . They are not being corny to the point of saying that they are going to win ; they are saying that the colours of the Mariners will be worn with pride in the capital and that they do not intend to be disgraced . I must say , this Oldham triumph could not have happened to a greater bunch of blokes . Every one of them , I hope , is my friend and in this friendship the pleasure is all mine .

Recovery was out of the ques tion . This was the break " Jonna " was looking for and he didn't waste it .
