OCR Hunter hits hat - trick for Mariners
SOUTH Shields Mariners in creased their lead at the top of the Northern Alliance to four points on Saturday when they defeated Belford 4-0 away .
Steve Hunter hit a super hat - trick and Alliance top scorer Jimmy Robson scored the fourth to bring his haul for the season so far to 14 .
Shields , who ended Bel ford's 100 per cent home record , were favoured by the other results , for second top Alston lost 2-1 at home to Bede College , Morpeth Town were held 3-3 at home by Workington Reserves and Alnwick lost 2-1 at home to Newcastle University . Marine Park were playing a cup match .
' BEST DISPLAY ' Bobby Shields manager Elwell commented : " On Sat urday we produced our best display of the 90 - minute
season .
We played really well . In many of our games this season we've played well in phases , but at Belford we put it together for the entire 90 minutes .
" We had a good talk on the bus on the way there and the lads were in exactly the right frame of mind for what was an extremely important game for us . "
Elwell added : goalkeeper Dick
" From Patterson right through the team we were right on top , and if I had to single anybody out I would have to pay a tribute to centre half Jimmy Com pton . He's had bad luck with injury , but he has come back into the side and tightened up the middle of the defence tremendously . "
When Robson scored the fourth at Belford it brought Shields goals total in North ern Alliance games to exactly 50 , and as there are another 19 games still to play they might yet realise their ambi tion of scoring 100 Alliance goals this season .

JOC MEETING OFF The Jarrow and Distriet JOC League meeting sche duled for tonight has been cancelled .
both goals in Saturday's 2-2 draw .
Robson gave Shields a fifth minute lead following a fine pass from Graham who him self later grazed the bar with a powerful drive . On the half hour Hunter laid on Robson's second goal , but ten minutes later Parker pulled a goal back for Workington .
EQUALISER
The home side grabbed their equaliser in the 65th minute when Murray scored .
In the second half Shields seemed content to fall back in defence , attacking only oc casionally , tactics they later regretted when Workington drew level . Shields were forced to open the game out but they could not regain their first half superiority .
A great ball from Madden sent Robson away on the left but his hurried shot went well wide . Madden was later substituted by Johnstone . Workington launched sev eral strong attacks and more than once came near to snatching a winner , but the Shields defence stood up well to pressure and the Mariners eventually got back into the game .
goalkeeper Workington's produced a great save when
Night Nurse and French Pin , the top three - year - old hurdlers in the North , clash in the £ 2,500 Northern Hurdle at Haydock on Thursday .

10-1 bar .
Robson shot from six yards , and a minute later he came out quickly and Robson again looked threatening , but Shields had to settle for a point .
Morpeth moved up a place to second top following their 3-2 win at Percy Main , while Alston lost their second top placing when held to a goal less draw by Wallsend Ath letic .
Marine Park kept up their challenge with a 5-0 home win over Wallington , while Alnwick were 3-1 home winners over Throckley and Belford drew 3-3 away to Bede College .
Stockton , in financial trouble and already discip lined this season for failing to turn out a team for a league cup tie , could be in deeper trouble .
On Saturday they were due to play Newcastle Uni versity away , but didn't arrive until 20 minutes after the scheduled kick - off time , by which time the referee had left after cancelling the fixture .
