74 10 Shields Gazette , Monday , January 20 , 1975 MORPETH LEVEL AS TITLE RACE HOTS UP THE shoulder - to - shoulder race at the top of the Northern Alliance shows no signs of easing up . South Shields Mariners , clear leaders of the table since September 4 , have now been forced to share top place by Morpeth Town as far as points are concerned , but they still hang on to No 1 spot on goal average . away Shields were held to a 1-1 draw by Wallsend Athletic on Saturday although Wallsend will argue that it was THEY who were held while Morpeth won 1-0 at Bedlington . Morpeth have staged a barnstorming run to reach the same points mark as Shields , and obviously their visit to Shields in March could well be the match to determine who finishes one and two . GAME IN HAND At the moment the odds slightly favour Shields . They have a game in hand , they have more home games left than Morpeth and their goal average is 3.04 compared to Morpeth's 2.17 . - But Morpeth , runners - up to Marine Park last season , have collected 15 points out of the last 16 to suggest their surge will take some halting even by Shields . Champions Marine Park remained on the fringe of this season's title race on Saturday by winning 2-1 away over Belford who at one stage led 1-0 before a goalkeeping error gave Marine Park their equaliser . This Saturday Shields have a day off from the Alliance but they will not be allowed to relax , for they face Wearside League leaders Steels SC away in the second round proper of the Durham FA Cup . SHOCK LEAD However , on Saturday Steels crashed 4-0 to Boldon CW , for whom ex - South Shields player Wally Carmichael scored all four goals . So Shields can gain comfort from that result , even though they may be disappointed with their own at Wallsend . In the early stages of the game Shields attacked strongly and it looked as though they might repeat IZ their 6-2 home win over Wallsend , but Athletic held on bravely and then took a shock lead in the 25th minute . Bell collected the ball on the right flank , cut into the penalty area and neatly slotted the ball into the net just inside the post . The second half was end to end stuff with Shields having chances to draw level but letting them all slip away until the 85th minute when Jimmy Robson scored from close range . It was abig relief to Shields - but they deserved at least a point . THAT is the question I put to Gazette readers tonight , beginning with the above photograph . I have been unable to identify anyone on the fading picture or determine when it was taken , but it could be an early picture of the old South Shields Adelaide Football Club . man And could that gentle ( second from the right ) , with his knees peep ing out between extra - long shorts and pulled - up socks , be the referee for the By Dick Kirkup game about to take place ? If you can shed any light on this photograph I would be grateful if you could call at the Gazette Office or give me a ring at South Shields 4661 . T In addition I am hunting for information and photo graphs of the early days of South Shields Adelaide and their successors , South Shields Football Club , leading up to the 1914-18 war and their days in the Football League . Obviously it is the towns ' older readers to whom I look for help , but there could well be books , photo graphs or cuttings that have been " handed down " and which may be gather ing dust . If you are unable to call at the Gazette Office , I'll call on you . I will be grateful for any help you can give . |
