VALUABLE POINTS Shields completed the double over Wallsend side Marine Park earlier in the four valuable points , for in each of the last two seasons Marine Park completed the league and cup double after being in fourth place at the turn of the year .
S
This weekend Shields should certainly collect both points for they meet bottom of - the - table Stockton at the Jack Clark Memorial Park . Shields are also aiming to score 100 Northern Alliance goals this season , and this game should enhance those prospects , too .
In addition , two of their title rivals clash this week end , when Marine Park have home advantage over Mora peth .

Johnstone sees Mariners
into last 16 with last gasp winner
SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners moved into the last 16 of the Durham FA Challenge Cup on Saturday with a last gasp 1-0 away victory over Wearside League club Whickham .
SHIELDS
LEAD CUT
TO JUST
ONE POINT
SOUTH Shields Mariners had their lead at the top of the Northern Alliance reduced to only one point on Satur day , although they have a game in hand over nearest challengers Morpeth Town . While Shields were reaching the last 16 of the Durham FA Challenge Cup , Mor peth were registering their 12th Alliance win over the season by beating Bede College 2-0 , and third top Marine Park overwhelmed Stock bottom - of - the - table ton 7-1 .
Shields have completed the double over Marine Park and still have to entertain Morpeth to whom they lost 4-2 away in the second match of the season . Morpeth and Marine Park have still to face each other ; indeed , they should have met on Saturday but they were separated in a reshuffle of fixtures caused by other teams being in volved in cup ties . This coming Saturday South Shields meet lowly Throck ley ( whom they beat 5-1 away ) at the Jack Clark Memorial Park and Mor peth are at home to second bottom Greenwells , so both sides should collect maxi mum points while no doubt improving their goal average .

expected to
play in U.S.
FORMER soccer star George Best will arrive in New York on Wednesday to negotiatie a possible contract to play for the North American Soccer League in 1975 , the New of the York Cosmos , one NASL clubs , announced last night .
It was a particularly satisfying win , for both Shields and Whickham applied for membership of the Wearside League last summer and whereas Shields were rejected , Whickham got
in .
International
Shields still have great res pect for the Wearside League a league with which the town has been associated for many years and if they were to renew their applica tion for membership this year , then victories such as that over Whickham must strengthen their case .

PETER WARFIELD the Cambridge University centre his international career after a break of two years by being chosen for the England team to play Ireland in Dublin on January 18 . Warfield , like former Eng land captain John Pullin , forces his way in after show ing brilliant form for The Rest in the final trial last month .
The other changes from the team originally named as England for the trial are Mike Burton in at tight - head for prop Stack Stevens , whose back injury may end his international career and Peter Dixon at flanker for John Watkins .

Neary and Andy Ripley . Team :
Warfield won three caps in 1972-73 when a student at Durham University . He went up to Cambridge in October and his first term took him to such a peak of fitness that he scored a try in the trial by showing speed that had not been seen by an England centre for many years . IN DOUBT
Clive Toye , former British soccer writer and now vice president and general man ager of the Cosmos , said : R Manchester " Last year United refused us permission to negotiate with Best . How ever , I have just received club has word that the changed its mind and gave us the right to talk to Best . immediately called " I George , and he has agreed to meet with us in New York on Wednesday . I fully expect that shortly after that meet ing we will be able to an nounce his signing for the coming season . "
Pullins international fut ure was in doubt after being omitted from The Lions tour of South Africa , a bad heel injury in the autumn and be ing dropped by his club . He fought off the challenge of the uncapped Peter Wheeler by claiming a 6-1 tight - head count in the trial .
He will be propped by Fran Cotton on the loose head , Cotton , England's new captain , played tight - head in all four Lions Tests after be ginning his international car eer as a loose - head . He now changes back so that Mike Burton's power as a scrum mager will not be lost in the absence of Stevens .

Whickham had their share of near misses on Saturday , particularly in the first half . Home centre forward Quig ley hit the post and then Kay saw his header hit the under side of the bar before being while Shields cleared , goalkeeper Dick Patterson made two breathtaking saves . MAGNIFICENT
Jimmy Compton and Jimmy McFarlane were mag nificent in the heart of the Shields back four , but overall it was a superb team perfor mance .
In the second half Shields gave as good as they got and it was Eric Johnstone who scored the all - important goal with just 60 seconds left for play .
Commenting on the result , Mariners manager Bobby Elwell said : " Really , we went there for a result and our win was the outcome of thorough preparation and ap plication .
well
" We had them watched a couple of times and I know their ground pretty There is a slope , and I planned that we would kick up the slope in the first half if we won the toss - which we did .
" It was a case of everyth ing we planned coming off . It was hard , of course , and Whickham went near , but Dick Patterson made two great saves and the rest of the lads just got stuck in . " Our playing plan worked the end I well , but near would have been happy to settle for a draw and bring them to Shields . However , Eric Johnstone grabbed the winner and that was that . It rounded off our preparations perfectly . "
The Durham FA confirmed today that the draw for the second round proper of the competition will be made on Wednesday night , the ties to be played on Saturday ,
