74 Shields Gazette , Friday , January 10 , 1975-13 CIAL Mariners going for double No. 4 at Jack Clark tomorrow SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners , leaders of the Northern Alliance table for the last 18 weeks , should extend their run at the top tomorrow when they meet third bottom Throckley at the Jack Clark Memorial Park ( 2.15 ) . Shields beat Throckley 5-1 away in September and they will be looking for two more points plus a hatful of goals to keep alive their aim of scoring 100 Alliance goals this season . But Shields , who have collected 13 points out of the last 14 , are coming under increasing pressure from Morpeth , last season's runners - up . At one stage Shields had a lead of six points , due to having played more games than their rivals , but now Morpeth have reduced the lead to one point al though they have played one game more . Tomorrow Morpeth are at home to Sunderland Greenwells who are second bottom in the table . If Shields do beat Throckley it will be their fourth Al liance double of the season . Shields midfield player Ray Young , who has scored 13 Alliance and cup goals this season , is out of tomorow's side because of a leg injury collected last week . Manager Bobby Elwell recalls Steven Hunter with Lyn Rutherford substitute . Team : Patterson ; K. McDonald , Compton , McFarlane , J. McDonald , Madden , Graham , Suggett ; Johnstone , Robson , Hunter . Sub . Rutherford . SHIELDS AWAY TO WEARSIDE LEAGUE LEADERS IN CUP SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners have been set a tough task in the second round proper of the Durham FA Challenge Cup . They have been drawn away to Wearside League leaders Sunder land Steels , the tie to be played on Saturday , January 25 . It will be a top - of - the - table clash for the Mariners them selves are top of the Northern Alliance However , in the last round of the competition , played last weekend , Shields also met a Wearside League club away , Whickham , and Shields won 1-0 . Whickham are a middle - of the - table side , which indicates what a stiffer test they face against Steels whose Wearside League record this season is : P 19 P 17 W 12 L 3 Shield's Alliance record this season is : L 2 W 14 D 1 F 43 F 62 A 23 A 21 PTS 28 ** PTS 29 winners The complete second round proper draw , the going through to the last eight , is : West Auckland v Consett or Durham City ( last season's beaten finalists ) ; Horden or Crook v Shildon ; Tow Law v Eppleton CW ; Spennymoor United ( the holders ) v Annfield Plain ; Wingate v Bishop Auckland ; Washington v Willing ton ; Darlington RA v Easington CW ; Sunderland Steels v South Shields Mariners . Shields manager Bobby Elwell this week gave Bishop Auckland seven days ' notice of approach for Kenny Parker , who formerly played for the old South Shields club . Parker is not cup - tied so he could be available for the tie against Steels if his permit is received in time . MORPETH STILL SNAPPING AT 10 Shields Gazette , Monday , January 13 , 1975 SHIELDS ' HEELS MORE AND more the Northern Alliance cham pionship is resolving itself into a two - horse race between South Shields Mariners and Morpeth Town , last season's runners - up . On Saturday both sides scored seven times , Shields beating Throckley 7-1 and Morpeth over whelming Greenwells 7-2 , with the result that Shields , with a game in hand , still lead the table by one point . But there is one significant aspect that may be the decid er for the title . Morpeth have Alliance played 19 games this season , and no fewer than 11 have been at home . Five of their last six games have been at home , and it has been this sequence that has helped them to their pre sent challenging postition . AWAY PROGRAMME In contrast , of their 18 All ance games to date , Shields have played only eight at home , so while Morpeth have just five home games left ( as well as eight away ) Shields have eight at home and only six away . Morpeth have still to visit Shields , while they have also to play third top Marine Park away . Obiously Morpeth's away form will be crucial , but Shields feel they can win the hot with 40 VITELNY ONILISIA Surpuǝds se a do e te nas dno od nasın goal show , Shields now re quire 31 goals in their re maining 14 games if they are to achieve one of this season's targets - 100 North ern Alliance goals .
