26 goal Jimmy Robson helps Mariners back to No. 1 spot
SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners returned to the top of the Northern Alliance table on Saturday following their 3-0 away win over Newcastle University .
Last week's leaders , Morpeth Town , who ended Shields ' five - month run at the top , were involved in a league cup - tie , allowing Shields to successfully neg otiate one of their two games in hand .
Shields and Morpeth are now both on the 34 - point mark at the top , but Shields have the superior goal average plus that valuable game in hand .
T
Morpeth appear to have the tougher run - in of fixtures to the end of the season , beginning this coming Saturday when they travel to meet third top Alnwick Town and they still have to come to Shields .
.
Morpeth not only lost the leadership on Saturday they were also bundled out of the league cup , suffering a shock 1-0 defeat at Wallington where they also lost 3-1 in the league this
season .
FIXTURE SWITCH
This weekend Shields were scheduled to meet Alston at the Jack Clark Memorial Park , but Alston are now involved in a league cup tie and Shields will instead be at home to Bedlington CW . Shields beat Bedlington 3-1 away in September , but 1 Bedlington have shown marked improvement recently , culminating
a
in
Saturday's 4-2 win over Wallsend Athletic who were themselves enjoying an unbeaten run .
On Saturday , Shields had the fillip of a first minute penalty goal by Jimmy Robson two plus quick hammer blows midway through the second half to see them to their 3-0 victory over Newcastle University . The students recovered well from their early setback in which Ken Parker was adjudged to have been obstructed . Benson almost caught Shields out with a shrewd back - heel flick but Dick Patterson saved well , and then Douglas blasted a
scoring chance high over the Shields bar .
When Shields turned on the pressure the home defence all at sea . was Robson had a shot blocked by goalkeeper Sherlow , who then pulled off a reflex save from a deflection . In the second half the students began putting their game together but got little change from a dominant Shields defence .
ROBSON'S 26th After substituting Stephen Hunter for Ritchie Madden , Shields increased their lead when Rutherford put Barker through to lay off a pass from which Robson side stepped his man to score his 26th goal of the season .
Two minutes later the Mariners increased their lead when Eric Johnstone staved off a strong challenge to meet a left wing cross and net from 12 yards out , his eleventh goal of the season .

Boldon CW
stay in title race
BOLDON CW added two valuable points in their quest for Wearside League title honours when they beat Whickham 5-1 at Boldon on Saturday .
They were always in command and the gave visitors defence a real hammering and but for some fine saves by the keeper , Whickham could well have been more heavily defeated .
The home side took the lead in the 10th minute when low Smith scored with a fine drive , following some work approach by Carmichael but the visitors got back on equal terms when McWhinney headed in following a fine centre by Dobinson .
The home forwards were not to be denied , however , Taylor putting Boldon ahead with a long range effort and then Wiscombe added a third just before the interval .
The second half was one way traffic and further goals were added by Walker and Smith .
Stuart Robson the home skipper , apart from having his usual steady game in defence , nearly got his name on the score sheet when his fierce drive was just off target .
Colin Rutter completed a valuable for while Kenny

Shields fifth double off the season .
SCHED
Shields , with a game in hand , still lead second top Morpeth on goal average only , but it is a vastly superior goal average , 3.25 to 2.32 , with Shields now requiring 22 goals from their eleven remaining games to complete a century of goals in Northern Alliance matches ,
DECIDER
Morpeth , 4-2 home winners over Shields in the second game of the season , meet Shields in the return at the Jack Clark Memorial Park a fixture that next month could well decide the championship . Against Bedlington , Shields dominated the game from the kick - off and it came as no surprise when , in the 28th minute , Parker collected from his pass goalkeeper to outstrip the visitors ' defence before slotting the ball past the advancing for ' keeper Shields ' first goal .

In the 38th minute Shields suffered a temporary setback when Lewis pulled one back for Bedlington to send them in at half - time on level terms , but in the second half Bedlington felt the full force of the Shields attack , inspired by man of the match Eric Johnstone . Parker completed his hat trick with goals in the 55th and 75th minutes , Jimmy Robson , 70 minutes , and Billy Graham , 78 minutes , completing the rout .
