Morpeth lose to champions , and
SHIELDS BOUNCE BACK TO LEAD TITLE CHASE
SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners hauled themselves back to the top of the Northern Alliance table on Saturday with a 5-1 home win over bottom - of - the - table Stockton ... last week's leaders Morpeth Town losing 1-0 away to reigning champions Marine Park .
This was indeed a vital day for both clubs ' ambitions for the championship , for while Shields now lead the way by only one point , they still have a game in hand and have what the appears to be easier run - in to the end of the season .
Four - goal blast by Kenny Parker
SOUTH Shields Mariners striker Kenny Parker , who hit a hat - trick two weeks ago , was again in great gcal - scoring form on Saturday .
He scored four beautiful goals in Shields ' 5-1 Northern Alliance victory over Stockton at the Jack Clark Memorial Park .
a
The Mariners blew succession of chances with wild shooting until the 28th minute when Alan Suggett collected a well aimed long distance pass from Ritchie Madden before hammering the ball into the Stockton net . Stockton kept up their spirits
by equalising through Fergora five minutes later and held on until the interval , but it was all plain sailing for the Mariners after the break . Parker , undoubtedly the man of the match , scored in the 50th minute with a beautiful cross from the right wing , to put Shields ahead and switch on the side's scoring machine .
He went on to score three more superb goals with the invaluable assistance of Suggett to completely demoralise the opposition .
Shields have nine games to play to complete their programme , but while the next three are all away , the last six are all at home including , of course , a home match with Morpeth on the last day of the season .
This coming Saturday Shields are away to third bottom Greenwells in a rearranged game , while Morpeth are at home to third top Alnwick Town , whom Shields have yet to meet away , so while Shields must be title favourites , Morpeth are still in with a chance to improve on their runners - up spot last season .
But Saturday was a black day for Morpeth , for while they lost to Marine Park , they also had Brian Main sent off for the first time in a long career . In addition , another of their players , Bob Henderson , had to go to hospital for treatment to a facial injury .
Shields ' drive to reach 100 goals in Northern Alliance games this season also looks to be within their grasp , for they are now on the 84 - goal mark with nine games still to play , and they should now reach their century in one of their remaining home fixtures .
Shields centre forward Jimmy Robson , who with centre back Jimmy Compton , missed Saturday's game against Stockton , is the current top Alliance scorer and he could well take the season's individual scor ing honours .
