10 Shields Gazette , Monday , March 31 , 1975 3-0 win keeps Mariners bang on schedule MARINER for the title WIDEN SOUTH SHIELDS Mariners went into today's return game against Seaham RS at the Jack Clark Memorial Park knowing that the Northern Alliance championship would be theirs if they could collect seven points from their remaining six matches . THE GAP Shields SOUTH extended their lead at th top of the Northern Alliance to three points over Morpeth yesterday when they completed a holiday double over Seaham RS at the Jack Clark Memorial Park . And with all those remaining six matches at home , the odds are still stacked on Shields winning the title at their first attempt . Seven points out of the remaining 12 would give them the Alliance crown on goal average , but it seems as though they will have points to spare . On Saturday goals by ( 2 ) and Jimmy Robson Kenny Parker gave Shields a 3-0 away win over Seaham and brought their points one point total to 44 ahead of Morpeth and with two games in hand . Morpeth kept in touch with two Shields with holiday victories , 3-2 at home against Wallington on Good Friday and 3-2 away over Wallsend Athletic on Satu are Saturday , but while their title hopes are still slim , they under increasing pressure from Marine Park , the reigning champions , for the runners- up position . On Good Friday Marine Park were 3-0 home winners over Alston and on Saturday they went on a goal spree beating Alston 7-1 away to give them a total of 37 points , six below Morpeth but three games in hand . FOUR FOR ' TON ' Shields also needed four goals today to complete their century of goals in the Alliance Northern season . this Centre forward Jimmy Robson still leads the way among the Shields marksmen with a total of 31 , 28 of which have been scored in Northern Alliance games . Ray Young has 15 ( 13 in the Alliance ) , Steve Hunter 14 ( 13 in the Alliance ) Kenny Parker nine ( all in the Alliance in just seven matches ) and Eric Johnstone 11 , nine in the Alliance and two in cup games . Alston are resigning from the Alliance , but their place will probably be taken by a .. new side from Carlisle . The majority of Alston's players come from Carlisle , and they are at present mulling over the idea of forming a new Carlisle club which , it is would be understood , accepted into the Alliance in place of Alston who have been beset with internal problems . The almost frozen spectators , who braved an icy wind , urged Shields on to complete the century but it will have to wait until Saturday when the Mariners are at home to Alston . The tall Steve Hunter should have slotted in goal No. 100 almost on time , but after superbly rounding two defenders and creating the chance out of nothing he I drove his 12 yards shot a foot wide . - LITTLE ADVANTAGE Eric Johnstone back . headed Shields into a 17th . minute lead when he met a near post corner by Ray Young but inspired goalkeeping by visiting Bill Calvet , using his body and legs and anything else he could get in the way of the ball , preventing any further scoring in the first session . Hunter , full back Keith McDonald and centre forward Jimmy Robson all had certain goals kept out by Calvert in the first half in which Shields found little advantage in having the biting wind at their backs . After the break Young made it 2-0 when he steered a fine header into the net following Lyn Rutherford's free kick on the left , and with ten minutes remaining Hunter added the third from close in after a build up on the left . Then came the chance for Hunter to score the 100th . goal ( in 27 games ) but it will keep until Saturday JACK CLARK MEMORIAL PARK From NORTHERN FOOTBALL ALLIANCE SOUTH SHIELDS MARINERS V R.
