Coun . Murtagh Diamond , Mayor of South Tyneide , pictured with representatives of South Shields Mariners and Boldon CW football clubs who were given a civic reception at the Town Hall last night . There followed some good natured banter between the clubs , each expressing complete confidence that the other would finish runners up , but everyone genuinely looking forward to a meeting described they " natural " .

You could almost get the FA Cup inside this silver masterpiece which was first competed for in 1890. The trophy will also be on display at Cleadon Recreation Ground Friday night when Shields their Alliance complete fixtures against Morpeth Town .

SOUTH Shields Mariners , newly crowned champions of the Northern Alliance , and neighbours Boldon CW , currently leading the chase for the Wearside Leal e championship , are to meet in a special challenge match .
It will be played at the Cleadon Recreation Ground on the night of Friday , May 16 , and all proceeds from the game will be in aid of the Mayoress's Charities .
The invitation to both clubs to meet in this unique match came in a surprise announcement by Coun . Murtagh Diamond , the Mayor when of South Tyneside , players and officials of these sides were given a civic reception at the Town Hall last night in recognition of

The Mayor congratulated Shields on winning their title in their very first season and wished Boldon good luck in their drive to bring a second championship to South Tyneside , after which came his invitation which met with instant agreement from both clubs .
Coun . Diamond said : " 1 would like to suggest that both clubs meet in a special challenge match for the Charities Cup . Mayoress's The winners will receive the trophy and the losers will receive a miniature . "

Suggett again as Mariners
beat Bede 1-0
SOUTH Shields Mariners , who clinched the Northern Alliance title on Saturday , maintained their unbeaten home league record with a 1-0 victory over Bede College at Jack Clark Memorial Park last night .
Alan Suggett , who notched a hat - trick against Newcastle University on Saturday , was the marksman , the goal coming in the 20th minute . Unfortunately five minutes after taking the lead full back Jimmy McDonald had to go off with a pulled muscle and , says manager Bobby Elwell " He will miss the Mariners last game of the on Friday night at Cleadon Recreation ground against Morpeth Town .
