SOCCER RECEPTION
Councillor Murtagh Diamond , the Mayor of South Tyne side , has launched a new soccer competition in the Borough .
It is the South Tyneside Charities Cup in aid of the Mayoress's Charities Fund , played for by the best two teams in the Borough . This year's game was betwten South Shields Mariners , winners of the Northern Alliance League , and Boldon , champions of the Wearside League , at Cleadon Recreation Ground .
The winners , Boldon - by 2 goals to nil - were presented with the trophy , which will be played for every year in a champion of champion's challenge match .
The competition was launched by the Mayor at a recep tion he held at the Town Hall for both teams to congratulate 01 .

A MAN who assaulted his former wife was fined £ 50 by magistrates in South Shields . Before the court was Gordon Munro Dring , of Fern Grove , Hedworth Estate , who admitted assaulting his former wife Margaret , causing her actual bodily harm on March 21 , The matter was a private prosecution .
Dring was also ordered to pay £ 10 costs and to forfeit £ 25 for being in breach of a binding over order .
Mr William Dodds , for Mrs Dring , said the couple had been divorced in January and in March , Dring visited his ex - wife at night , demanding to be allowed in .
She refused and he foreed his way into the house . " He punched his wife violently in the face " said Mr Dodds , " causing a black eye and a bloody nose . "
DISPUTED
Mr David Levy , for Dring , said his client disputed the fact that he had forced his way into the house .
He said he was made welcome and it was only when she made a remark to him that he " swiped her across the face with the back of his hand . "
Dring did not intend to harm his ex - wife , said Mr Levy , and the couple had had no further contact .
