South Shields Mariners players and officials Trophy join forces for an historic photograph to mark the beginning of a new era in the senior football in the town . - SHIELDS ' SECRET : such 9 2 success . So many people have played a vital role in the club's remarkable story of success , and Martin Ford adds : " And don't forget our army of agents who distribute our weekly tickets . They have done a great job . But really our championship is a monument to the efforts of many people ! " We have achieved a lot in our first season , but it couldn't have been done without magnificent team work . This club is no one man band ; we have excellent committee , and we have managed to lay solid foundations for the future . " Great run an This review of Shields ' season would be incomplete without just a few statistics to indicate how the championship was won . For instance , they battled through their last 22 Alliance games of the unbeaten , collecting staggering 40 points out of a possible 44. Their record in those final 22 games was : P W D season a run F A Pts 22 18 4 82 14 40 It was this barnstorming that destroyed the challenge of Morpeth Town who for so long kept Shields in their championship sights . At one stage Morpeth felt they were in with a chance of their first Alliance championship since 1903 but with Shields firing on all cylinders and hardly dropping a point on the run - in , Morpeth just couldn't keep up . In the event , Shields , who won their last seven games in a row , became the first club on this side of the Tyne to win the title in 40 years and lost Morpeth even the runners - up spot they won last season to Marine Park , last season's champions . Nine ' doubles ' Shields also completed their home Alliance fixtures with a 100 per cent record approaching an average five goals a game , and their total goals of 118 has only once been beaten in the Alliance in the last 19 years . And if ask you Belford , Marine of By DICK KIRKUP THE STORY of how South Shields Mariners won the Northern Alliance championship in their very first season , cannot fully be told in terms of cold statistics . But they certainly help . ON AND OFF THE FIELD Statistics will never reveal the dedication and leadership of manager Bobby Elwell ; the appli cation and unswerving loyalty of the players ; the endless hours of work put in by chairman Martin Ford and his committee ; and the solid support of thousands of townspeople who make the club's money - raising scheme resounding a what Park , SHIPPING TELEGRAPH THE TYNE IMMINGHAM VESSELS IN THE TYNE ( From the Port of Tyne Authority ) Arrivals yesterday : Benvenue , Arrivals yesterday Saltend ; Leadsman , Aberdeen ; Doric Ferry , Felixstowe ( Readheads Gem , Kymassi .
