FRA inte tom H 16 - Shields Gazette , Friday , August 22 , 1975 and Shirt shirt and he is aimi ing for a repeat of his form in the correspond ing game last season . Leicester won that game 1-0 , and it was Worthington ' who laid on the winning goal for Steve Earle six minutes from time . Worthington outshone Supermac that day with an outstanding all round display of powerful running , scheming and shooting . Worthington recently quoted as saying : " I am a much better player than Macdonald . I make goals as well score them ; Macdonald is just a scorer . I desperately want the England centre forward position and I believe I should have it ahead of Macdonald . " as full from Typical honesty from Shields have signed back Keith Bensley North Shields and the third new face is Fred Carr who last for season played Parsons . Elwell , who assembled last season's squad with great care , sets a high standard , so the new men can be expected to maintain that standard . Shields have lost full back Keith MacDonald to North Shields , while Eric Johnstone has decided to retire after giving fine service to senior soccer in South Shields over the years . Strong stuff , but typical honesty from one of the talented country's most players . So tomorrow he has his chance to put his ability where his mouth is against Supermac who scored twice at Ipswich last weekend and claimed his third goal of the season in the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough in midweek . In June , 1972 , Worthington , then with Huddersfield , was all set to join Liverpool for £ 150,000 but it was discovered he had MANY THANKS , SAYS SHIELDS CHAIRMAN WE ARE now at the opening of another football season , a season which , as far as South Shields Football Club is concerned , will see the club build on the foundations which were laid at the beginning of last year and which gained strength during the 1974-75 season . Whereas the match - day activties of the club have been acknowledged by the league in the form of the Northern Football Alliance championship trophy , the club would like to express its appreciation to the members and officials of South Tyneside MBC and of the former South Shields CBC ; to the hundreds of agents who help to finance the running of the club ; to the officials of the Durham Football Association and the Northern Football Alliance for their guidance ; the loyal supporters for their encouragement ; and to the many well - wishers without whose generosity and support the club could not exist . The club is proud to represent the area in the Northern Football Alliance and will endeavour to continue to provide the high standard of football which the area deserves . We will say " Thank you " to all our friends in the best possible way - on the playing field ! MARTIN FORD Chairman South Shields Football Club . 12 - Shields Gazette , Monday , August 25 , 1975 SP S 2743 Mariners 0-3 down -but draw 3-3 IT NEEDED a blistering last quarter of an hour from South Shields to pull a 3-3 draw out of the bag , after trailing 2-0 at half - time and 3-0 mid - way through the second half at Percy Main on Satur day . After the first ten minutes of the new season the physically larger Shields team appeared to have the edge over the side which took a point from them in the corresponding fixture last season . Although not playing brilliant football , Main continued to graft away and they took the lead after 35 minutes through Addison who put his shot wide of goalkeeper Dick Patterson after beautifully controlling a lobbed pass into the heart of the defence . Shields fell further behind after 41 minutes when Casey , taking advantage of a 25 = year shot from Ridley which hit the bar , forced home the rebound . Captain Billy Graham's authority over the Shields side was to be needed during the second half if the Mariners were to salvage anything from a rather shaky start . But Shields suffered 2 further blow after 67 minutes when Addison scored Main's third goal and his second . For the second time Steve Hunter was just wide for Shields , but on the hour , Ken Parker started Shields ' rally . Alan Suggett crossed from the left , drawing the goalkeeper off his line , and Parker neatly headed it into an empty net . The final ten minutes saw the Mariners begin an onslaught on the Percy Main goal . The pressure paid off in the 81st minute when a Hunter through ball split the defence and found Jimmy Robson in a lot of Space . He steadied himself and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net from 12 yards . Having fought back to 2-3 , Shields flung everything at the home side to get the equaliser , and with three minutes remaining a Robson shot across the goal was deflected to Parker who scored from six yards . In the closing seconds the Mariners had another goal disallowed for offside . |
