Leicester won that game 1-0 , and it was Worthington who laid on the winning goal for Steve Earle six minutes from time . Worthington outshone Supermac that day with an outstanding all round display of powerful running , scheming shooting .

Worthington quoted as saying : " I am a much better player than Macdonald . I make goals as well score them ; Macdonald is just a scorer . I desperately want the England centre forward position and I believe I should have it ahead Macdonald . "

back Keith Bensley from North Shields and the third new face is Fred Carr who last played for Parsons . Elwell , who assembled last season's squad with great care , sets a high standard , so the new men can be expected to maintain that standard . Shields have lost full back Keith MacDonald to North Shields , while Eric Johnstone has decided to retire after giving fine service to senior soccer in South Shields over the years .

Strong stuff , but typical honesty from one of the talented country's most players . So tomorrow he has his chance to put his ability where his mouth is against Supermac who scored twice at Ipswich last weekend and claimed his third goal of the season in the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough in midweek .
MANY THANKS , SAYS
SHIELDS CHAIRMAN
WE ARE now at the opening of another football season , a season which , as far as South Shields Football Club is concerned , will see the club build on the foundations which were laid at the beginning of last year and which gained strength during the 1974-75 season .
Whereas the match - day activties of the club have been acknowledged by the league in the form of the Northern Football Alliance championship trophy , the club would like to express its appreciation to the members and officials of South Tyneside MBC and of the former South Shields CBC ; to the hundreds of agents who help to finance the running of the club ; to the officials of the Durham Football Association and the Northern Football Alliance for their guidance ; the loyal supporters for their encouragement ; and to the many well - wishers without whose generosity and support the club could not exist .
The club is proud to represent the area in the Northern Football Alliance and will endeavour to continue to provide the high standard of football which the area deserves . We will say " Thank you " to all our friends in the best possible way on the playing field !

THE GOAL OF THE SEASON
WITH apologies to Jimmy Hill , his 1975-76 " Goal of the Season " competition is a non starter .
The goal that must have won this season's BBC TV
been and gone and , Dick Kirkup's
sadly for this country's
soccer fans , there wasn't a camera there to cap ture the magic of it .
The only action replay that exist of this goal is in the minds of the 37,471 lucky enough to see Malcolm Macdonald score it against Leicester City who lost 3-0 at St. James's Park on Saturday .
Match of the Day's ten million viewers were denied a Supermac gem , plus a second half display of attacking football by Newcastle that fulfilled every hope expressed for entertaining football in the
new season .
Manager Gordon Lee was delighted . Everytime Newcastle scored he jumped out of the dug - out with arms raised , joining in the celebrations with the fans . It was a great display , " he said . " Again we worked hard with all the lads helping each other . I've said before , if a side works hard enough the rest will come .
" PLEASED "
" The players now know they can face any team in the land on at least equal terms . I'm pleased with the start we have made . "
So he should be , for five points out of the first six is a performance Newcastle have not achieved since 1964-65 . And Supermac , with five goals in three games , is bang schedule to reach his target of 40 goals for the eason . But he will have to

continue his sensational form if he is to maintain his scoring rate .

For Derby on Wednesday night he will be up against centre half Roy McFarland who is jostling Dave Watson for the No. England 5 shirt . Obviously McFarland will be out to impress Don Revie with an England display against Macdonald , while on Saturday Supermac clashes with Watson himself when United travel to meet Manchester City , so this is a week and a half for the Newcastle centre forward .

HIT THE BAR
I have always regarded Macdonald as an old fashioned centre forward ; the type who goes for goal at full gallop with the ability to outpace defenders and finish with a fierce shot . Well , his second goal on Saturday was the type of goal Jackie Milburn could have scored .
Full back Irving Nattrass worked the ball forward before sliding a pass into the path of Macdonald who , 25 yards out , hit a first - timer on the run that sent the ball hurtling into the top corner of the net . He had opened the scoring in the fourth minute , and in the 70th minute he surged down the left wing to pull a low centre back for Micky Burns to notch the third and
Macdonald himself could have had five with just a little bit of luck , one header beating goalkeeper Mark Wallington but thudding back into play off the bar . Macdonald's view of it all ? " I have never hit the ball better than when I scored the second goal . As soon as I hit it I knew it was in . It looks like being a great season , doesn't it . ? "
SO
Sunderland landed both points from nearly Saturday's trip to Oxford , but a draw away from home is always a fair result and it underlines that no mistakes should be made at home . Bobby Moncur gave Sunderland the lead in the 59th minute with his first goal for the club , but Oxford grabbed an equaliser in the dying seconds to make it 1-1 . Sunderland

disappointed at conceding a point when they seemed to have won both , but at least they now have two home matches in which to build on a start of three points from three games , two of which away . Tomorrow night they face Second Division leaders Fulham at Roker Park and on Saturday Blackpool come to Wearside

and it could be a four point week for the Wearmen .
A double
RICHARD Fox , yet another fine prospect from the " Frenche " Nicholson apprentice academy , has booked mounts in five of the six races at Epsom's final stage tomorrow , and it would not surprise if he pulled off at least a double .
And the afternoon's biggest prize on the famous Downs track , the Steve Donoghue Apprentice Handicap , looks a snip for young Dick on Bob Turnell's penalised five year old charge , Buckie .
Buckie , who wound up last season with two wins , was succesfful on only his second appearance this year , when Fox steered him to a thrilling half length victory

over Paddy Jack at Salisbury 12 days ago . Fox should be in the winners ' enclosure again , after the Fetcham Handicap Stakes , which I expect him to win on the Scobie Breasley trained three - year - old In the Balance .
At Ripon's second and final stage , I shall be looking to Johnny Seagrave and consistent Mr McMandy to land the two and a quarter miles Wakeman Stayers ' Handicap from Sandy Barclay's mount , New Henry . Mr McMandy has run second three times since scoring over a distance just short of two miles easily at Edinburgh in mid - June . Seagrave can also start the
