Mariners held
to another draw
AFTER SNATCHING a late 3-3 draw at Percy Main on Satur day , South Shields looked for both points , and a repeat of last season's 3-0 victory , from their first home match of the season against Seaham Red Star at the Jack Clark Memorial Park last night .
However , the Mariners ' yards , but a Seaham side , showing three changes defender got his head to the Macdonald for Bensley , ball and deflected it over the Compton for McFarlane and bar . Carr for Madden - could only manage a 1-1 draw in a disappointing match which started 15 minutes late due to the late arrival of the visitors and confusion regarding a clash of strips , Shields might have taken the lead after only six minutes when Ray Young had a chance on the six = yard box following a long Steve Hunter throw , but he sliced the half volley wide of the post .
EQUALISER
Seaham took the lead in the 25th minute when Ashett picked up the ball on the right , beat two defenders just outside the penalty area and Dick gave goalkeeper Patterson no chance with a fierce shot .
The Mariners ' hopes were given a tremendous lift ten minutes later with a well a taken
equaliser . Billy Graham took a free kick ten yards inside the Seaham half , floating the ball towards the far post . Ken Parker left the Red Star defence standing and easily headed the ball home from four yards unchallenged .

After 62 minutes Ritchie Madden gave Parker opportunity to score his second but as he picked up the through ball on the edge of the penalty area , he got right underneath it and squandered the chance over the bar .
With just under ten minutes remaining Graham seemed to have scored with a tremendous volley from 15
Now it's
AFTER last week's re port of vandalism and butchery of racing stock , comes news of probably the worst ever disaster to hit the homing world .
Fire at the South Hylton allotments in the early hours of Tuesday morning is being treated as arson by both police and fire authorities , Two lofts were burned to the ground , all the birds died , and the fire brigade had to use all their skill and expertise to save a further two lofts .
The first loft belonged to Mason and Son , who calculate their loss in the region of £ 500 , but cannot put a price on the upset it has caused them . The second loft belonged to another partnership , that of Gibbons and Haswell , who have been much to the fore this season due to their tremendous performances Channel .

consistent play , there is still for improvement compared to last season's form .
Shields failed to take the game to their opponents in the initial stages and paid for it after only six minutes . They conceded a free - kick a few yards outside their penalty area , and Martin touched the kick to Duncan who rifled the ball into the net .
After this early blow , Shields , lacking a little in confidence , were lucky not to fall further behind after ten minutes . Martin struck a fine shot from the edge of the box which Patterson got both hands to , as he dived full length . The ball hit the inside of the post and rolled across the face of the goal to be scrambled away .
PARKER STRIKES The Mariners , however , levelled the scores in the 18th minute . Ritchie Madden pushed the ball through the middle of the Belford defence and into the penalty area . Ken Parker , seeing the opening , was quickly on to the chance and , as he and the oncoming goalkeeper D collided , Parker's slight touch was enough to put the ball into the net .
Seven minutes later Shields took the lead for the first time in a match this season . Jimmy Robson picked the ball just up outside the box and beat two defenders before hammering the ball into the net .
Immediately after half . F time Shields increased their lead through Parker . As } Jimmy Robson drew two l defenders away , Madden i found Parker in the box to the right of the goal with no defender marking him . After picking his spot he slammed the ball through the narrow } gap between goalkeeper Anderson and the near post . Right on time , Robson had

RECOVER
THEIR GRIP Wallsend for six
BOLDON C.W. took a firm grip of their Wearside League home game on Satur day with Wingate after a first - minute shock when Veart shot past from a free kick and despite the odd scare were worthy 3-0 win ners at the close . Farquarson put Boldon ahead after ten minutes giving Swinburn no chance following Robson's free kick and immediately afterwards should have made it two from a similar situation but hit the ball over the bar . Wingate showed good ap proach work which broke down around the penalty area and Smith was rarely troubled in his Boldon goal except for back passes by defenders .
Immediately after the interval Smith increased Boldon's lead from a penalty which appeared to dis hearten the visitors . McGee and
Veart worked hard in Win visitors ' keeper had twice

Marine School Under 21's team meet at Westoe Club house tomorrow at 6 p.m.
NORTHERN ALLIANCE champions South Shields are back in business - the goals business .
Scorers of 118 Alliance goals last season they showed signs of their champ ionship form by winning 6-1 at Wallsend on Saturday to move up to third
in the table .
But omce again they allowed the opposition to score first , although by the end manager Bobby Elwell was satisfied that the team's touch was returning .
Shields had done all the early running when Redford gave the home side the lead following a disastrous mix - up in defence . PACKED DEFENCE The treacherous conditions , due to torrential rain , made control difficult , but Shields drew level in the 35th minute through Ray Young who earlier hit the underside of the bar with a header . Shields hockey men beat Boro 16-0
to
South Shields men's hockey team beat Middlesbrough by the record breaking margin of 16-0 at Brinkburn on Saturday .. Inspired by the power of six goal hero Alan Corbyn , the home forwards poured a continuous stream of shots into the beleaguered Boro goal .
The visitor's reply was a solitary shot at goal by the otherwise luckless Dave Belk . Scorers were Corbyn ( 6 ) , King ( 5 ) , Downes ( 4 ) and James .
against a packed defence , following the first goal , Shields eventually nosed ahead just before half = time when Ken Parker , who was substituted two minutes after the interval following an injury , headed in .
The second half saw Jim McFarlane replace Parker . Skipper Billy Graham played a more attacking role after the break as Shields started to string passes together and dominate the game .

Five minutes into the half Jimmy Robson found the net after Alan Suggett's low cross shot parried by goalkeeper Peel . With 15 minutes remaining Robson scored again from close range , although his mis timed shot , following MacDonald's cross , deceived Peel .

COMPTON GOAL
Of all people to get among the scorers was centre back Jimmy Compton . Ritchie Madden's corner fell in front of Compton at the far post of Compton at the far post and he squeezed his shot through a narrow gap .
Peel's performance was not enhanced a minute before the end when Suggett sent a low cross into the six - yard area . The goalkeeper went to collect , but he let the ball go through his arms and trickle over the line .
