OCR SHIELDS LAST LEAGUE DEFEAT OCTOBER 5
AFTER THEIR 3-0 vital win at Marine Park last week South Shields are clear leaders of the Northern Alliance by two points in the title race , and deservedly
so in view of their un
beaten record to date .
In fact the Mariners have now gone 28 league games since their last defeat , which was at Alston ( 3-5 ) away back October 5 , last year .
on
Goal a game Ken Parker again notched a vital first goal to give the Mariners their early lead , and though Marine rallied strongly before and after the interval , they failed to
score .
Instead Billy Graham increased the goals ' gap and the late clincher from Steve Hunter put paid to Marine hopes completely .
Morpeth
confounded their
Town critics
and did the Mariners a good turn by winning 2-1 at Carlisle to upset the ' form ' book , scoring twice against the Cumbrians who had previously conceded only three goals .
Though still unbeaten , Seaham Red Star slipped up by only managing a 1-1 draw at home to Alnwick Town , putting them on eight points parity with Percy Main Amateurs and Carlisle City , both of whom have a better goal average .
This point kept Alnwick Town in contact with the leading four , having lost one game so far , to Carlisle City ( 1-0 ) away .
Greenwells continue to show good form but still lose matches , the latest loss to ( 3-2 ) Workington Reserves hardly doing them justice . The Sunderland side gave their man of the match award to pivot Mick Lovstadt , while winger Tom Henderson set up their first goal and scored their second with a cheeky long distance chip . Trevor Cohen was expected to make his debut for Greenwells today .
Percy Main leapt into third from top spot with a fluent 5-0 win at Throckley Welfare ,
Having blunted the Marine Park challenge South Shields were hoping to do the same today
against chief contenders Carlisle City at Jack Clark Memorial Park .
Next week brings another stiff test for the Mariners away to Alnwick Town , but current form indicates that the task is within the scope of the Mariners , who will not relinquish the title lightly .
The following week Shields are at home to Wallington in the League Challenge Cup , after which a home game with Morpeth should help to dispose of yet another challenge for the top spot !

MARINERS THREE POINTS CLEAR
AT THE TOP
NEWCOMERS to the Northern Alliance , Carlisle City , found it hard going when they visited South Shields on Saturday .
As the league table indicated , this game could really be considered , a " four - pointer " , the Mariners occupying poll position , a win putting them four points ahead of City , with the Cumbrians needing both points to draw level with brought down unfairly from Shields at the top . behind .
As it was the Mariners ran out 2-0 winners , both goals coming in the first half hour and inevitably goal - a - game Kenny Parker again got his name on the scoresheet , bringing his haul now to ten in seven games .
Hours of solid rain had reduced the pitch to near ice rink conditions . The first half , however , was spared a furt er downpour , but the limited skills exhibited disappeared after the interval , the entire second half being played in thunderstorm .

It was the first half , therefore , that provided the faithful supporters , who stuck it out to the end , with most of the excitement .

Prolific Parker , however , got a black mark to his name after only six minutes when the referee had retaliated after being his name after the striker had retaliated after being
Then , in the 15th minute , Parker beat full back Armstrong to the ball , approaching the bye - line to the left of the goal . The No 10 , faced with an acute angle , cooly placed his shot past Jackson , the City keeper .
The Carlisle goal was subjected to intense pressure , the result of good build - ups , with Steve Hunter looking better in midfield than he has done all season . His tackling and passing were of a high standard and he also started to take on defenders more , in the fashion he did rany times last season .
Deservedly it was Hunter who snatched the second goal Parker and Hunter left the entire Carlisle defence standing in midfield as they successfully defeated the offside trap . Hunter took the ball on and , as the goalkeeper came to the edge of his area , side - stepped past him before slotting the ball home . with defenders sprinting back in despair .
