10 Shields Gazette , Saturday , October 11 , 1975 PARKER KEEPS GOAL - A - GAME RECORD ALTHOUGH all their chief title rivals won , South Shields kept three points ahead after a hard earned 3-2 win at Alnwick last week in the Northern Alliance . Despite conceding the first goal the Mariners snapped back with three counters before the break , which was just as well because Alnwick had them on the defensive later on . Kenny Parker kept his goal - a - game record with the last one after Jim Robson and Ray Young had scored . Seaham had to make a comeback too after Athletic had Wallsend opened the scoring , but it finally all came right for Red Star with a 3-2 vicory . Denis Halliday ( 2 ) and young Malcolm Guy were the scorers for Seaham , who fielded a new goalie Bernie Giblin in when both Alan Turns and Jeff Williams were ruled out through injury . That 10-0 rout of Bedlington took Carlisle City into third from top place on goal average above Percy Main . The Cumbrians dropped scorer That second - half equaliser put Wallington back in with a chance before Jim Robson rattled in the welcome winner to put Shields through to the second round . Lynn Rutherford deserves a special mention for another fine full back display , including the two superb centres from which Shields scored . Two Seaham Red Star suffered their first reverse of the season in going down 2-0 at home to Belford . battling breakaways second - half sufficed to sink Seaham who had pushed up all their players to break the deadlock , and a sparkling display by Belford keeper Dave Anderson saved his side . Carlisle City caught Mor peth Town out with two key men off , Billy Kidd being married and Brian Main at the wedding , and this served the Cumbrians well to win 2-0 , and avenged a home defeat earlier this season . NORTHERN ALLIANCE RUTHERFORD'S SUPERB CENTRES IT was League Cup day last week in the Northern Alliance when South Shields survived a scare to beat Wallington 2-1 after struggle . quite a hectic With Ken Parker declared unfit the Mariners had to reshuffle the side , but after an early Steve Hunter goal , they settled down . ace Percy Main had to wait for a last minute clincher their midfield trio for lack of effort and in a one - sided game took the Terriers apart . prevented Percy Main Durham University from making a winning start to their fixtures , by beating the students 3-2 . Despite dominating the exchanges Percy Main were 2-0 down midway in the second - half . shrewd substitution A brought on Brian Appleby to score then ' Daz ' Ridley reversed the lead in favour of the visitors . Wallington completed a month of woe for Marine Park by beating them 2-1 after coming from behind . Young Billy Hair gave Marine the fillip of a fifth minute goal which stood for 60 minutes , then Colin Mather equalised and Dave Gray hit the late winner for the Greens . Town shared the honours in an eight goal drama at Durham where the University , students have a useful squad on this display . To score four times against one of the best defences in the league indicates University will be a force to be reckoned with . A 3-1 win at Greenwells gave Throckley a boost out of their losing sequence , and they too conceded the Keith first goal when Waterson netted a close range effort . This was all had to that Greenwells DID THE TRICK FOR MARINERS to beat Throckley Welfare 2-1 in a hard robust game . Campbell Murphy put Percy Main ahead before half - time , and though Den Hodgson got the equaliser , justice was served with Ron Hammell came near the end as " sub " to grab the winner . on Alnwick A 3-1 win at Workington showed the improvement by Greenwells from last season , and augurs well for progress in the league . The overworked Bedlington defence took ( 9-0 ) another pounding against Wallsend Athletic , who have now beaten the the Terriers in league 5-1 , the N.F.A. Benevolent Bowl 3-1 and the League Cup so far this season . the shows It also of the deterioration Bedlington side , which less than four years ago the finished in second league and as runners - up in the League Cup ! In the only league game of the day Marine Park continued their slump to five successive defeats , four of them in the league , by losing 2-1 to Newcastle University , who were playing their first game of the season . Centre Steve forward Earl ( 2 ) made a sparkling debut to show why he played for Scunthorpe to before coming University , and others to shine in the young students ' side were 18 - year old Phil Atkinson , Peter Bell from Newbiggin Hall and ex = Boys Club , Wallsend Athletic player George Gibb . With most of last year's squad available the students look like being a strong force . NORTHERN ALLIANCE P W D L F A Pt 6 2 26 9 14 3 5 5 4 South Shields 8 Seaham RS 8 Carlisle C 8 ... Percy M.
