SHIELDS WIDEN
THE GAP TO FOUR POINTS
AIDED by their 4-2 result over Morpeth Town last week South Shields enhanced their lead in the Alliance table to four points and look favourites to retain the title .
Even with Billy Graham and Fred Carr on the touchline , the Mariners were never troubled by the mediocre Morpeth and once a 3-0 lead had been set up the leaders were home and dry .

What a
weekend
for Boldon
BOLDON CW had a tough but successful time last week end . On Friday night they fought out a dour battle when they visited the Gateshead Stadium to face the United Reserves in a Shipowners ' Cup tie , the game going into extra time before Boldon progressed to the second round .
Their goals came from Micky Carr , who scored twice , Eric Anderson , Ray Brown and Derek Kirkbride , with Joe Pooley ( 2 ) and Peter Davies keeping Gateshead in the game .
Only 18 hours later Boldon were at it again , this time at Ryhope in a Wearside League game . They had quite a changed team with their two key men , Stuart Robson and Wally Carmichael , out following injuries Both Brown and Anderson were on the mark again , the latter scoring twice as did Stew art Farquharson to keep the Welfare in tuch with league pacemakers Blue Star .

3-0 win over Bede College , who have quite a useful squad , Newcastle University learnt from a 0-0 draw in the League Cup in midweek .
Percy Main pulled off a smart win ( 3-1 ) at Seaham where Red Star slumped for the second successive week in front of their fans . Giving away two soft goals let Seaham down but Percy Main were struggling to field a full side , and played newly signed Stewart Thompson who had a sound debut .
Wallington lost their chance to get into the top four by only managing to draw 2-2 with Washington Reserves who were two up at one stage , through Maurice Moore . A second half rally by the Greens brought a point through David Gray and Graham Wilson goals .
Durham University . pulled off a shock 3-1 success at Alnwick in their League Cup replay
Being on FA Vase duty today South Shields will have their lead in the table reduced , possibly by both Carlisle City at home to Wallsend , and Percy Main who are hosts to Belford . NORTHERN ALLIANCE

OFF - TARGET SHIELDS
SOUTH SHIELDS ' 1-1 draw at Wingate on Saturday in the first round of the FA Vase was a disappointing out come when it is rem embered that they pin ned the home side in their own half for lengthy periods and should have settled the issue in the first half alone .
The Mariners , unlucky with the scoring chances although casual play resulted in some of them going astray were also on the wrong end of some refereeing decisions . They might have had two penalties for suspected hand ball , while in another incident , a shot from centre forward Jimmy Robson appeared to have crossed the line before the goalkeeper pulled it back , but their claims for a goal were ignored .
Shields were altogether quicker than Wearside League club Wingate and after the first ten minutes , when both sides had settled down , it looked as though it would only be a matter of time before they nosed ahead and establish a substantial lead .
Jim McFarlane , coming up for a corner , had the first genuine chance . A deep cross , put back into the goalmouth by Jimmy Compton left the No. 5 with only goalkeeper Swinburne

to beat from six yards , but his mistimed shot went wide . Kenny Parker , below his best form , had a 15th minute header scopped out from under the bar and four minutes later a 20 yard shot from Ray Young screamed inches over the bar .
Wingate , more dangerous on the quick break than in constructing moves from the back , had to wait until the 25th minute for their first chance . A corner on the right resulted in Hudson glancing a header towards the far post but Dick Patterson's outstretched hand palmed away the danger .
On the half hour Shields

on the defensive again . A series of attacks led to Parker being put through on the left into the box but his shot sailed well over the bar .
Some of the Shields supporters standing behind the Wingate goal were adamant that Robson's shot ten minutes before the interval had crossed the line after going through Swinburne's arms . Neither referee nor linesman signalled a goal and the half ended goalless .
the net five minutes from the end through Gilmour , his header into the top corner giving Patterson no chance . Extra time might have been avoided as late as the 87th minute when Parker first time volley from Young cross hammered against the bar before the defence could scramble it away .
The 1-1 score prevailed all through extra time , South Shields always remaining the superior side but unable to capitalise on the breaks continuing to come their way . Next Saturday's replay at the Jack Clark Memorial Park ( kick off 2.0 ) should see them into the second round , but this second match should , on reflection , have been unnecessary .

thwarted Robson's point blank header nine minutes into the half with cat - like reflexes . He was rather unluckily , beaten in the 66th minute , however , when Steve Hunter's 25 yard drive came off defender Dale and rolled across the line to give the Mariners the lead .
Ritchie Madden , ffering from an injured knee sustained after only six minutes , was replaced by Billy Graham soon after the goal as Shields seeemd to that the game theirs for the taking - but the chances continued to go wide .

PAKISTANI batsmen Aslam Ali and Khalid Irteza set a world record for the third wicket when they put on 456 in a first - class cricket match in Karachi .
Their 560 - minute stand beat the previous record of 445 set by New Zealanders P. E. Whitelaw and W. N. Carson for Auckland against Otago in Dunedin in 1936-37 . Khalid hit 290 and Aslam 236 as United Bank scored 656 for five declared against Multan in a four - day Patron Trophy match . Khalid had contributed 268 when the partnership ended with Aslam caught in the covers .
