Vase replay
IN MANY respects , Saturday's FA Vase first round replay between South Shields and Wingate at the Jack Clark Memorial Park was similar to the first meeting a week earlier .
Shields were always the superior side in that the majority of goal chances came their way , and their 3-2 victory earns them a second round trip to Alnwick Town where the Mariners have already won 3-2 in the Northern Alliance this season .
On Saturday Wingate twice took the lead , but on both occasions they were assisted by in the Shields defence .

defender , but in trying to head clear in front of goal , his header instead flashed into the net .
They had two other opportunities before half time but Carmichael's weak finishing marred their excellent midfield build up . Annfield Plain gradually fought their way into the the defensive game but qualities of Robson and Kirkbride plus the safe handling of keeper Stanness prevented any breakthrough . Pines determination on the Annfield left created a scare but as defenders closed in , his hurried shot hit the side netting .
The only goal of the game came midway through the second half when Anderson touched a free kick to Carmichael whose drive rebounded from the keeper and full back Taylor was on hand to slot the ball home .
A highly controversial decision by the referee after 35 minutes denied Shield the chance of levelling the scores . Steve Hunter's corner to the near post was cleared by a defender after he appeared to handle the ball . The linesman's flag immediately went up and stayed up for a lengthy but the referee , unmoved by the appeals from the home players or the linesman , would have none of it and waved play on .
The first goal , in the 25th minute , was an own = -goal by centre back Jim MacFarlane . A Wingate free kick deep into the Shields ' goalmouth was intercepted by the
Boldon's win period puts them
joint top
BOLDON repeated last week's 1 - vicory over Annfield Plain to give them joint leadership of the Wearside League with Blue Star although having a slightly inferior goal average .
The home side created the better chances in the opening stages and Coulson in the visitors ' goal did well to block Farquarson's shot in the 12th minute following a determined run by Carmichael down Boldon's left wing .
What seemed an obvious penalty aroused a certain amount of feeling both on and off the field , but fcour minutes later all was forgotten as the Mariners equalised . Full back Jimmy Macdonald's cross from the right found Kenny Parker at the far post rising above the entire defence , his header into the top corner leaving goalkeeper Swinburne well beaten .
At a time when it seemed Shields would win fairly comfortably , a defensive slip t by Lyn Rutherford in the W 64th minute let in Hudson to J slip the ball past the M advancing Patterson from 12 Р yards . Now 2-1 down , Shields W made immediate R substitution , Alan Suggett P being replaced by Freddie Carr .

Another cross by Macdonald , headed back across the goalmouth , found Billy Graham two yards out , and he made no mistake with the easiest of chances .
There was no decisive improvement , however , and the equaliser came with only 15 minutes of normal time remaining , marking the start V of some great football by Shields , Wingate never 1 getting a real look - in .

Again it was the result of a cross from Macdonald , whose overlapping role figured prominently in his overall performance . On the far post found Parker whose downward header on to the line beat Swinburne and his . defence .
The crowd , numbering over 400 , went home pleased , and it will be interesting to note the attendance at this Saturday's home Northern Alliance game against Wallsend Athletic when Shields return to league duty , still the top of the table on goal average although with games in hand over all their closest rivals .
