But the aforesaid Mr. T. holds the key to the answers we have all been seeking : has John Conteh concentrated more on apeing Warren Beatty recently than on being a world boxing champion ?
On Saturday in the unglamorous surrounds of Scranton , Pennsylvania , the bearded Taylor , a no hoper , takes on Conteh in our boy's first scrap outside the High Court in a long time .
I've admired Conteh as a super athlete for a while now . But I've worried recently about his attitude and application .
He appears to have been going the way of other pugs - downhill through the easy life .
Conteh's visited London's night spots such as Tramps and the Playboy Club more often than the gymnasium . And his fights have been exclusively with his manager George Francis .
It is not so long ago that another hand some young man with the world at his feet blew it . Name of George Best . And we haven't enough wonderfully gifted portsmen like Best and Conteh to lose m just like that .
The cascade of words which have ifted over the water from the States ggest all's well . Conteh's only in one te - and that's a good one . Or so he

I only hope those words aren't proved to be empty ones when the talking stops and the gumshields are put firmly into place on Saturday night .
I pray that Willie Taylor is dispatched fast and with style .

And that America's Bobby Cassidy goes next in Madison Square Garden to line up the big one with Victor Galindez , who holds the other half of the world light heavy title in the crazy world of boxing . where two sit on the throne like Siamese Twins at every weight outside heavy .
Contel's God - given ability has never been in question . Only his temperament and , perhaps recently , his dedication . We are about to be given the answers via Mr. Taylor .
MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE in 24 hours to 10 a.m .: 24C . ( 75F . ) . Mini mum : 17C . ( 63F . ) .
Remember him ?
I MET an old mate over the weekend . Name of Johnny Ingham .
Remember him ? If you're a few years over 30 and haven't lived in a Northumbria cave for the whole of your life you must do .
NEWCASTLE RAINFALL in 24 hours to 10 a.m .: Nil .

He was the little fella with the crinkly hair who mesmerised full - backs in the old days of the Third Division North when excitement took pride of place over the coaching manual .
Ingham was outside - right in a good looking Gateshead team that played at Redheugh Park . As a kid in short trousers I used to peer over the top of the crushbarriers to marvel at his style ... I went to Redheugh one week , Gallowgate the next .
Joe Harvey , skipper of Newcastle at the time , always reckoned United should have signed Ingham and defender Tommy Callender .
Joe's often repeated that story to me .. And , even allowing for the fact that my recollections are as a kid looking at foot ballers through rosetinted glasses , I tend to agree that both Ingham and Callender were more than competent enough for the First Division .
So why did they never leave the homely but limited surrounds of Redheugh and the fatherly figure of Bill Tulip .
Johnny , bronzed and looking excep tionally fit for a 51 - year - old , shrugged his shoulders .

" I guess I was happy , " he told me . " Several big clubs like Sheffield Wednes day wanted me . Newcastle even came for me and signed the other right winger Billy Foulkes from Chester instead because he suddenly had a blinder .
" But the wages were the same every where in my days . The maximum wage hadn't been lifted and there was no cash reasons to shift . So I stayed . I enjoyed my football at Gateshead . Those were the good old days . Now a lot of the fun's gone . "
Ingham still keeps in touch with one of his last Gateshead coaches Lawrie Mc Menemy , now boss of Southampton . And he reads about football avidly . But he actually takes himself to a game only on limited occasions .
Gateshead , you are left feeling , remain his great love . A faded dream . But a dream to clnng to nonetheless .
Firing line
AT the Thomas Wilson Club , Low Fell , to - morrow night . I put myself in the firing line alongside the considerable verbal talents of Malcolm Macdonald in a sports show aimed to pump some much needed cash into Gateshead United , the little soccer club which now plays at the Youth Stadium .
Gateshead United have ambitions to bring back the days of Ingham , Gray , Oliver and the Callender brothers . They are aiming for the stars - League football -and tomorrow Mac and his mate will be doing their bit to help . Hope to see ya ! ★ ★ ★ SUPER FAN : That's Jacqueline Harris of Scotswood who goes a bundle on Super Mac . In fact she dropped a line to that certain beer firm which uses Mal's smiling mug on their adverts asking for a poster . And surprise , surprise - she received one by return . Now I hear that Mr. and Mrs. Harris are contemplating moving house to find a bedroom wall large enough to take the advert !
