Mariners sail to success
THE town of South
Shields was left in the football wilderness
Premier League club
moved to Gateshead two years ago .
There was a public out cry at the time because the area was left with no senior football club .
But now they have found a team to support again the side that was formed in the wake of the old South Shields ' departure .
South Shields Mariners were formed a month after that departure - and are now enjoying a great run of
success .
They joined the Northern Alliance and are currently unbeaten this season after 14 games .
That's just this season , however . They have not tasted defeat in their last 35 league games and are unbeaten m competitive foot ball for the last 14 months .
Wembley trip ?
And now they are through to the last 32 of the national FA Vase competition at the first attempt just four games away from Wembley final .
-
a
They have been attracting gates of around 400 for their home league games , and are expecting nearer 1,000 when they entertain Brigg Town , near Scunthorpe , in the Vase next month .
By that game , the club are
BOBBY ELWELL
hoping to have their new stand ready on their council owned Jack Clark Memorial Park pitch .
It will provide covered standing accommodation , but later the club are planning to put in seating for about
160 .
The money for the stand has come from hard work and fund our raising activities , " said secretary Ian Joice .
" We are the senior club in the town now and hope can local give the We something to supporters shout about . We have been
getting good crowds so there must be a demand . "
The Mariners success must bring special satisfaction to and manager Bob Elwell leading scorer Kenny Parker -who were both with the old South Shields club .
Confidence
Elwell Was manager of South Shields many years ago , while more recently Parker was a regular in the side - at centre - half !
He was played in the back four when he moved to Bishop Auckland . but Shields decided to play him up front when they signed him last season when Elwell was bringing the present team together . And the former Northampton player has repaid that confidence , with 24 goals already ' this campaign .
now
He is backed by some seasoned players like Lynn Rutherford , Jim Compton ( both ex - South Shields ) , centre - forward Jimmy Rob ( ex - Birmingham ) and skipper Billy Graham ( ex Newcastle and Queen of the South ) .
son
They also have former Blyth Spartans player Ray Young , a talented midfield operator who has been getting amongst the goals , and an attacking full - back in Jim McDonald .
In their second season in the Northern Alliance they are in the running for the championship and now on the march to Wembley . These Mariners are definitely riding the waves .
