SOUTH SHIELDS COMPLETED the first half of their 1975-76 Northern Alliance programme on Saturday , and they opened up a four - point gap at the top of the table with a 4-0 away win over Morpeth Town .
Second top Carlisle City and fourth top Seaham Red Star were without a game on Saturday while third top Percy Main suffered a shock 4-1 defeat by mid - table Belford .

now have a wonderful opportunity to retain Northern Alliance championship , having a healthy lead at the top plus the " invisible " asset of games in hand over all their challengers .
As the Mariners ran up their 14th successive Alliance win at Morpeth , they were being spied upon by the manager of Lincolnshire club Brigg Town , who this Satur day tackle Shields in the fourth round of the FA Vase at the Jack Clark Ground . FOUR MISSING
But their dossier will be a little incomplete , for Shields registered their win without regular goalkeeper Dick Patterson , left back Lyn Rutherford , back four man Freddie Carr and striker Jimmy Robson . Patterson , replaced by Stan " The Spy " Craig , who himself has watched Brigg , and Rutherford will return against Brigg , but Carr is doubtful and Robson is

Shields took the lead ten minutes later , Alan Suggett's corner finding Parker on the edge of the 18 yard box .
Parker's header back into the
middle gave Ray Young
ample time to lob his header into the top corner of the net .
A mediocre first half was finished off seconds before the whistle by Parker , side - footing home Shields ' second goal from six yards . Malcolm Pringle , who played an excellent midfield role , set up a 20 yard shot for Steve Hunter but his fierce drive was blocked by a defender , the ball falling to Parker , just to the right of the goal . To solve the injury crisis , manager Bobby Elwell had the services of Keith Macdonald , who played 31 games last season , and Eric Johnstone , back out of retirement , and who played 24 games last season , as substitute .
The lead was increased to three after 70 minutes . Suggett chipped into the goalmouth to find Parker who easily slipped the ball past the keeper from a few yards .
Parker completed his second hat - trick of the season five minutes later when , completely unmarked eight yards out on the left , he hammered a low shot into the net .
Young was then replaced by Eric Johnstone who had two chances in the next few minutes but failed to find the net .
Before South Shields left for Morpeth on Saturday , tragedy struck on their ground . The severe overnight gales completely ripped off the roof of the new stand the club has been working on and which would have been completed in time for this weekend's visit by Brigg Tn .
The stand will undergo makeshift repairs , and the club still hopes to offer some covered accommodation .
SPALDING
Playing together in only their second tournament , Cox and Wade displayed aggressive tennis in defeating the 34 - year - old American and the 19 - year old Czechoslovak girl . The British pair will now meet the top seeded American team of Dick Stockton and Rosemary Casals in tonight's final . The only time the Britons looked in trouble was in the second set of the one hour and 40 minute match , when Cox double faulted on his serve . That mistake cost them the set .
Virginia Wade makes a return in the semi - final match of the Spalding World Mixed Doubles Championship in Dallas . Her partner Mark Cox looks on apprehensively - but he needn't have worried , for they won their way to tonight's final with a win over Marty Riessen and Martina Navratilova .
