LINCOLNSHIRE club Brigg Town showed great sports manship in defeat on Sat urday night as they enjoyed a reception laid on for them by South Shields , who hours earlier , had delivered a 3-1 fourth round knock out to end their hopes of reaching the Wembley final of the FA Vase . Brigg chairman Harry Wil liams said : " It was all about conditions . The wind was terribly strong and I think , without detracting from the Shields ' victory , it affected us more than them . However , having said that , in football a team has got to adapt to conditions , and today Shields did it far bet ter than us .

one of the sides tipped to go far in the competition suggests that the Mariners themselves have elevated among the strongest teams left in . But cup football being what it is , much depends on a team's form on the day PLUS the ability of a team to adapt to whatever conditions prevail .
It was definitely a case of the latter on Saturday . For

the second successive week officials at the Shields club had attempted to cover in their new stand with roofing material .
But for the second successive week , howling gales took their toll . The makeshift tarpaulin roof was no match for the winds and the work had to be called off .
The gales showed no sign of relenting as kick- off time approached and it became obvious that the tie would be decided on adaptability . Brigg , unfortunately for them and their supporters , did not adapt as well as the Mariners and consequently Shields ' know - how was the deciding factor in the first half .
Indeed , Shields added to Brigg's worries as early as in the seventh minute . Lyn Rutherford's left wing cross found the head of the incoming Ray Young and he steered his header into the nèt .
It was exactly the start Bobby Elwell's men needed . The big crowd was given something to shout about and from then on there was no lack of encouragement .
In the 21st minute Steve Hunter increased the lead . A scramble in the Brigg area ended with Hunter's ten - yard shot taking a deflection off centre - half Martin as it went past goalkeeper Casswell . BRILLIANT
One of the features of the first - half , and for most of the second , was the duel between the 6ft 4in Martin and Shields ' Kenny Parker . the Martin , ex - Scunthorpe player , kept Parker at bay for most of the time , his height giving him the edge
in the air .
The Mariners ' defence played brilliantly in the first half , Brigg only being allowed a couple of genuine chances . Probably the most clear cut fell to Gowling ten minutes from the interval . From six yards he got up to glance a header towards the post but Dick Patterson , his going low collected the ball cleanly . In the middle of the

defence Jimmy Compton missed nothing and in midfield , Malcolm Pringle turned in the most stunning performance of his short stay at Shields .
In the first five minutes of the second half Brigg were awarded a penalty for hands . Patterson punched clear but when the ball came straight back and Rutherford , on the ground , touched the ball with his arm . Wrack took the kick and , although Patterson got a touch as he dived to his left , the number four had placed it well enough to
score .
Shields now entered danger period ; an equaliser could have meant the end , but the defence was good enough to keep Brigg out . Sykes did get a shot in from 20 y ards , but the wind carried it wide . With 15 minutes remaining , Brigg were unlucky to lose Martin , the anchor man of their defence . He had sustained an injury to his leg a few minutes earlier and unable to continue . HOPELESS

Six minutes from time saw the most welcome goal of the season go in for Shields . Hunter put Young through on the right wing and the cross which came over left the defence in a hopeless position .
w as
Casswell was off his line and could only watch Young's effort strike the inside of the far post before crossing the line . The mounting tension removed and the goal proved to be a ' life - saver ' in the final two minutes . Brigg continued to battle for an opening but when they came Bloomer struck the upright and Williams put over the bar from close range . Although
Kenny Parker did not get his name on the scoresheet , the weekend brought even greater success to him . His wife , Marie , gave birth to a 91b 1oz . baby boy on Friday night .
So it's congratulations all round .

To which Shields chairman Martin Ford added : " Brigg are a very good side in deed , but on the day we had the edge . Our lads played great stuff in trying conditions - but the con ditions were the same for both teams . I am very proud indeed of the way our team played . They thoroughly deserved their victory .
Brigg manager Brian Strat ford , whose team had con ceded only three goals in 12 league games this season - they are three points clear at the top of the Premier Division of the Lincolnshire Counties League with three games in hand said : " Yes , Shields adapted to the wind far better than we did . We tried much to play too close football in conditions that demanded a more open game . Shields played brilliantly in the condi tions , and on the day I have no complaints . Shields are a very good side in deed . " Shields manager Bobby Elwell , a flu victim , had to leave the celebrations early , but he commented : " I was de lighted with our display . The lads were a credit to the town . South Shields is much very a football minded town , and the way supporters rallied round us was terrific .
" There was a great crowd to cheer us on , but I have always felt that if we put on something worth watch ing the crowds will come to see us . Everybody in the club greatly appreciates the support the town gave us for this match . And I am happy we gave them the right result in return . "
