In the third round they were 1-0 home winners over Coventry Sporting who were this season's early FA Cup giant killers when they defeated Tranmere Rovers before going out to Peterborough United . Commenting on the draw the tie will be played on January 31 Shields chairman Martin Ford told me : " After the way the town supported us on Saturday against Brigg Town I was hoping for a home draw as # reward for those great supporters . However , it's no good moaning about an away tie . If we are going to win the Vase we must prove
Day the kissing
THE kissing and cuddling which follows the scoring of grals in cup and league games may soon be a thing of the past if the FA's Match and Ground Committee have their way .
The Committee has recom mended to the FA Council that " these practices should stop and that players who continue to act in this way should be charged with bringing the game into dis repute . "
The FA's Executive , Dis ciplinary and Study Com mittees are to look into the matter .

Shields manager Bobby Elwell said : " Naturally I was for a home tie don't think I anybody left in the competition could beat us at the Jack Clark Ground . However , all the lads are filled with confidence and we think we can at least get a replay out of this one .

this season they have fallen behind with their fixtures and in some cases have eight games in hand over teams around them in the table . Harris , a full back and former England Under - 23 international , joined Bridgnorth as a player in 1962 , later left the club but returned two years ago as manager since when he has rebuilt the side into one that struggles in the league but plays well in cup ties .
Bridgnorth felt there had been an illegal approach and the upshot was that when , six weeks later , Worcester sold Davies to Derby for £ 15,000 , Worcester gave Bridgnorth a cheque for £ 100 .
Skipper of the Bridgnorth side is striker Colin Hemsley their top scorer with 17 league and cup goals this season and the brother of Ted Hemsley the younger Sheffield United player .

The club's headquarters is a nearby pub but they are shortly to start work on their own clubhouse . Their average league attendances this season are between 100 and 200 while their home ties in the FA Vase have attracted between 300 and 400. For the visit of South Shields they are expecting a crowd in the region of 600 .

ANOTHER HAT - TRICK
THREE points clear at the top of the Northern Alliance table and three games in hand on the second and third clubs . That is the remarkable position South Shields now find themeslves in after disposing of the meagre challenge of Bede College 3-0 on Saturday .
The second half was especially disappointing to the crowd after seeing Kenny Parker score a first half hat - trick , increasing his league haul to 26 . This was his second consecutive league hat trick .

Shields ' 15th successive league win now leaves them with one remaining league game , Durham University away this coming Saturday , before the FA Vase clash at Bridgnorth , the following week . In fact , the game after that is yet another cup tie , the second round of the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup in which the Mariners travel to Carlisle City ( February 7 ) . Although lacking in goals during the second 45 minutes , Saturday's game was certainly rewarding in other respects . The Shields ' line - up saw the welcome return of back four man Freddie Car ( Malcolm Pringle taking over Madden's Ritchie midfield role because of injury ) and also Jimmy Robson as substitute . Manager Elwell Bobby wanted reassurance that he will have his full squad of players available for selection for the Bridgnorth game , and the signs are encouraging .

Harris was neatly
by Steve Hunter in midfield before laying the ball off to Parker on the left after beating full back Thompson . Parker found a gap between Harris and the near post to rifle in his shot unchallenged from ten yards .
Parker scored his second after 35 minutes when Pringle's low cross from the bye line found the number ten in the six yard box , and a first timer gave Harris no chance ,
Pringle went off a couple of minutes before half - time for four treatment and minutes later skipper Billy Graham suffered a cut eye .
Parker's third goal came seconds before the interval . Ray Young split the defence down the middle to put Parker through in the penalty area , and although Harris managed to get a hand to the shot , he could not keep it out .

Although Pringle returned the second half he eventually went off to be replaced by Jimmy Robson with 20 minutes remaining . Robson
was given the chance of scoring on his return after 75 minutes when a push on Young resulted in the referee giving a penalty , but Robson fired wide from the spot .
The second half goal glut expected by the crowd failed to materialise , although the chances were there . Bede provided the Shields ' defence with no problems whatsoever throughout the match , but this week's game might hold some hidden threats for the Mariners .
Durham University brought off one of the day's shock results when they held Alnwick Town , on Alnwick's St. James ' Park ground , to a 3-3 draw . Even surprising was the score Bedlington 1 , Carlisle City 1 , Bedlington snatching only their third point of the
