SHIELDS STILL
THREE CLEAR
ON THEIR return to Northern Alliance duty last week , South Shields won easily 3-0 against Bede College in what was little more than a work - out .
It was good to see Ken Parker back on the goals trail with a hat - trick before half - time , and for Fred Carr to show no ill - effects of his recent injury lay - off . In similar vein , Jim Robson came on as sub . in the final 20 minutes for a work - out after his protracted injury spell . This success kept the Mariners three points ahead of Percy Main who also won comfortably , 3-1 over Newcastle University , whose keeper Mike Sherlock saved the students from heavier defeat .

at Bridgnorth coming up next week , South Shields would want to steer clear of injuries to key players at Durham University today . Meantime , the Mariners supporters have calculated that seven more wins in the league will assure their side of winning the league championship again this season
The Reds cured their goals famine with goals by veteran Eric Banks ( 2 ) , Wayne Harrison ( 2 ) , Ron Walker and full back Dave Edgar , while Athletic added to their own misery with a penalty miss .

SOUTH SHIELDS failed in their bid on Saturday to break the 40 un beaten Northern Alli ance games barrier . While snow forced many other fixtures to be cancelled , the Mariners went to fourth bottom Durham University and could not find a way into the Durham goal until it was too late .
Both Durham goals in their 2-1 win were the result of serious defensive mistakes and , with less than a week to go to the Bridgnorth FA Vase tie , some tightening up has got to be done .

Due to being on cup - tie duty today , and next week when they travel to Carlisle in the League Challenge Cup , South Shields could be headed in the Northern Alliance table by both Marine Park and Seaham Red Star , neither of whom have cup commitments .

strengthened their squad by shrewdly signing up Colin Rutter , last season's joint top league scorer , from nearby Morpeth Town , where he had been in dispute with that club for a while .
Belford extended their unbeaten home run to ten league games with a 3-1 success over Greenwells , whom everyone seems to warrant as being worthy of higher placing in the league . In the event the Sunderland side scored first but by the interval it was 1-1 then Belford asserted their superiority with two further counters .
