back into the game when a shot from Parker hit the side netting . Then Robson tried to get in a shot but it went weakly to Bradburn .
Bridgnorth's best chance came to Pugh following a cross by Pinches but his low shot was well saved by Craig . But it was Shields - who took the lead after 26 minutes when SUGGETT headed past Bradburn following a right wing cross . Then the Mariners went near again when a shot from Hunter was narrowly wide .
FOUR CORNERS Bridgnorth hit back and a cross from Pinches gave Francis an opportunity but he was robbed by Carr who kicked the ball over his own bar .
Shields won two corners but both were cleared then Bridgnorth , seeking the equalisers , won four corners in succession but could not take advantage of them .
Half - time : Bridgnorth So Shields 1 Bridgnorth went on to the attack immediately after half - time and Ward shot narrowly wide then Shields had another narrow escape when a cross from Pinches hit the side netting .
Compton failed to clear a through ball and let in Francis for Bridgnorth but his shot was blocked . Then a left foot shot from Hemsley went just past the post .
Shields made it 2-0 in the 60th minute following a break - away attack when high a cross from Suggett dropped at the far post for GRAHAM to stab the ball past Bradburn .
Bridnorth had a fine opportunity to reduce the deficit when Francis found Hemsley in the clear but Craig faced his shot .
NARROW ESCAPE Shields followed with a good deal of pressure but were unable to pierce the Bridgnorth defence again . A free kick from L. Bristow went yards wide of the Shields goal .

Mariners march towards Wembley
SOUTH SHIELDS MARINERS are just two matches away from the FA Vase final at Wembley .
The Northern Alliance champions reached the quarter - final stage with a fighting 2-0 win against Midland Combination side Bridgnorth on Saturday . And they did it against the odds after losing regular goalkeeper Dick Patterson with a broken thumb just two before the match . days
Ex - Newcastle United and Wallsend keeper Stan Craig stepped into the breach with a superbly confident display to inspire his team mates when looked like fighting their Bridgnorth way back into the game .
A header by Alan Suggett put the Mariners in the right mood for goals and the second from Billy Graham made it safe .
With two bus loads of their own supporters along side hundreds of Geordie exiles from the Stafford shire area cheering them on it was quite an occasion for South Shields , who are the first North - East team to reach the quarter - finals of this new competition .
