10 Shields Gazette , Monday , February 9 , 1976 Scoring record for Steve Hunter as ... SHIELDS SLAM 10 - GOAL BLITZ CLUB RECORDS were shattered one after the other on Saturday as South Shields tore the Throckley defence to pieces in an eight - goal second half Northern Alliance goal spree . A final 10-1 scoreline is the largest win in Shields ' one - and - a - half season history , beating last season's 8-2 home victory over Workington Reserves . On a diabolical quagmire - like Throckley pitch , Kenny Parker's individual scoring record , five against Belford at the Jack Clark Ground on December 13 , fell by the way - side , midfield player Steve Hunter setting a new stan dard , with a personal seven - goal blitz . Mariners at home to Bedlington At the outset , however , the fact that Shields would get a hatful of goals against eighth bottom Throckley was all the more a probability if you consider that the home side were only able to field nine men at the start of the game , their numbers only being made up after the interval . SOUTH Shields will be at home to Bedlington in a Northern Alliance game at the Jack Clark Ground this coming Saturday ( kick - off 3 p.m. ) when coach reservations for the FA Challenge Vase quarter final match against Friar Lane OB in Leicestershire on Saturday , February 21 , will be accepted . As expected , Throckley put the emphasis on defensive play and as a result the Mariners had ample room in midfield to draw out and wear down the defence . Throckley's goal scoring potential was obviously tremendously reduced yet , having to rely very much on breakaways , they nearly took a tenth minute lead . HUNTER'S FIRST Melgram , playing a virtual lone striker role , broke through on the left and although he slightly mistimed his 18 - yard shot , he forced goalkeeper Stan Craig down to his left to save as he came off his line . In the 16th minute , though , Ray Young found Jimmy Robson on the edge of the Throckley box . Robson slipped the ball to Steve Hunter 20 yards out and he hammered a shot past goalkeeper Kelly . After 25 minutes Melgram found himself free on the left again , Jimmy Compton having lost the ball in the mud , but as he neared the box he shot wide of the advancing Craig only to see it go outside the far post . Shields went further ahead ten minutes before half = time . Robson crossed to Parker , unmarked on the left side of the area , and his first time shot only allowed Kelly to help it into the roof of the net . Club public relations officer Johnny Rundle , who organises the coaches , says : " We should have been away to Carlisle City on Saturday in an Alliance Challenge Cup tie , but Carlisle have a cup tie of their own to play , so we are delighted to have a home game this weekend . " It means that our supporters can book their seats this weekend on the coaches for the game against Friar Lane OB . We hope to run at least two coaches for supporters , for this match in Leicestershire is going to be a hard one and we'll need all the support we can muster . " Those wishing to travel cam book either this coming Saturday , or by giving me a ring at South Shields 2731 during this week so that I have an idea of how many coaches we'll need . It would be a great help if those supporters who intend travelling a week on Saturday could pay their fares by this coming Sunday , either to me or at the Adam and Eve Hotel in Laygate . Friar Lane OB a club that runs no fewer than seven teams and holders of honours numerous qualified Shields in to entertain the quarter finals by beating Leeds Ashley Road 2-1 away on Saturday , Even though Throckley fielded a full side of the second half , the nine who had done their best to hold Shields were beginning to tire and the defence started to crumble under non = stop Shields pressure . HAT - TRICK After 47 minutes Hunter scored from close range and , following an individual run in the 53rd minute , Robson chalked up the fourth . With only one minute remaining Hunter scored the tenth in a similar fashion to his first . Again he was positioned 20 yards out , and after neatly chipping the ball up on to his right foot the volley that followed left Kelly helpless . The final score could so easily have been eleven when Parker beat Kelly with a half = volley from eight yards , but as he hit the ball the final whistle sounded . Shields laid selge to the Throckley goal . In the 70th minute Robson pulled back a right wing cross for Hunter to shoot low inside the near post from six yards . It was then just five minutes before Hunter netted the seventh and his fifth . A series of shots from close range involving Billy Graham and Jimmy Robson among others gave Hunter the chance to fire in the final rebound from only close range . In the 81st minute , Parker scored his second of the match when he volleyed home from eight yards following Young's cross , and Parker was involved again Jack Nicklaus , one stroke one minute later when he behind at the start of the was pushed off the ball in final round , could only the penalty area .. Buddy Allin , also round in 67 , was third on 348 , stroke a behind Massengale . Miller's tremendous round produced four birdies on the outward nine and five on the homeward half . He said afterwards : " I felt that I could win because I had not been playing well this week but I was still close to the lead . " It was Miller's 17th tournament win since he joined the U.S. circuit in 1969 . Jim Colbert hoisted himself into a share of fourth place with a 64. Level with him on 351 were Jerry Heard ( 67 ) and Dave Newquist ( 69 ) . Overnight leader Billy Casper collapsed to a 74 which left him in ninth place on 353 . Peter Oosterhuis , of Britain , had a par 72 for 360 , final equalling the par total for the 90 holes . NOW SHIELDS ARE ALL SET FOR THEIR BIG DATE SOUTH SHIELDS manager Bobby Elwell heaved a huge sigh of relief when the final whistle sounded at the Jack Clark Ground on Saturday . For not only had the Mariners beaten Bedlington 4-0 to strengthen their bid to retain the Northern Alliance championship , they had also , and probably more import ant , avoided collecting any more injuries . ★ Placings ★ Why ? This coming Saturday Shields keep the most important date in their history when they travel into Leicestershire to meet the strongly fancied Friar Lane OB in the quarter finals of the FA Challenge Vase , and the last thing Elwell wanted was additional injuries to upset his plans . Goalkeeper Dick Patterson has now missed three games because f a fractured thumb the plaster is still on and he will be sidelined for a few weeks yet - and while his " cover " Stan Craig is an accomplished goalkeeper in his right , there is nobody to come after Stan . own - Midfield player Ray Young , scorer of 12 goals this season and a key figure in the Shields set - up , was substitute on Saturday because of a groin strain and fortunately Elwell was not forced to call on him . The worries man But it all emphasises the worries in a manager Elwell's position must face . Because of economics the club does not run a reserve team , Elwell operating on 14 quality and not quantity , but when injuries come along they complicate team planning . So Elwell's smile at the end on Saturday reflected a clean bill of health rather than two points that maintain their two - point lead at the top of the table . The key figures of Shields ' attack , Kenny Parker and Jimmy Robson , both found the net twice on Saturday , increasing their respective totals in league and cup games to 36 and 18. Still in terms of league and cup , Saturday's victory brought NORTHERN ALLIANCE 3 6 4 49 30 30 2 5 49 20 28 P W D L F A Pt South Shields 20 17 2 1 83 17 36 Marine Pk 23 16 2 5 61 29 34 Percy Main 21 14 4 52 30 31 Seaham RS 22 12 Carlisle City 20 13 Wallington 19 12 Belford 21 11 Morpeth Tn 23 Alnwick Tn 17 7 4 Durham Univ 16 6 Throckley W 18 Wkton Res 21 4 Greenwells 24 6 Wallsend Ath 21 6 N'castle Univ 17 5 Bede College 15 2 Bedlington 22-2 3 4 46 26 27 3 7 48 37 25 9 2 12 45 56 20 4 6 34 22 18 6 6 25 28 14 2 10 38 55 14 6 11 29 47 14 1 17 45 50 13 1 14 30 59 13 2 10 21 44 12 2 11 18 50 6 1 19 19 92 5 the team's goals haul for the season to a staggering 99 , the 100th hopefully coming this weekend to help the Mariners to victory in the Vase . Shields ' first came after eleven minutes but not before Fuller , two minutes earlier , saw his 18 yard shot tipped round the post by Stan Craig . When Parker picked up a careless the pass in Bedlington defence , he immediately found Robson on the edge of the box , and he turned and shot in one move , planting the ball in the far corner of the net . The second , five minutes later , involved Parker from start to finish . His pass to Ritchie Madden on the right wing from midfield split the defence , Madden's cross from the bye line being met by Parker who scored with a header . - Best goal Of all four goals the third was undoubtedly the best as far as the build up was concerned . It came in the 23rd minute . Madden found Billy Graham on the right a flank , and the Mariners ' skipper then executed perfect chip over full back Hennessey to find Malcolm Pringle on the right of the box . Pringle crossed before Hennessey could recover , and Parker , again loose in the goalmouth , touched it home . In the 55th minute Robson's placing of the ball , this time from a dead - ball situation , produced goal No. 4. From a free kick 20 yards out on the left , Robson bent the ball around the defensive wall into the net . One of the outstanding features of the whole game was the good linking up on the right between full back Jimmy McDonald and midfield men Madden and Pringle , all three having a hand at some stage in the move which led to the third goal . K On the touchlines Shields ' growing following was again in evidence , and several supporters have already booked up for Saturday's Leicester trip . The club have so completely filled the first coach and a second is now half full . Anyone interested in travelling can book at the Adam and Eve Hotel , Laygate , or with club public officer relations Johnny Rundle , at South Shields 2731 , by Wednesday . Coaches will leave the Adam and Eve Hotel at 8.30 on Saturday morning . |
