MINOR LEAGUE men have their say on PAGE 10
LEN SMITH
You can't keep our Len down
BOLDON CW are still six points behind Blue Star at the top of the Wearside League table but they are far from convinced that they they are going to have to relinquish the championship trophy which they won last season . They argue that four of those six points differential can be accounted for because these two top teams have yet to meet one another twice in League games .
At Hebburn last week the Colliery side were well worthy of their two points . Wally Carmichael gave them a good start with a couple of first half goals and Ray Brown playing against his former club , got a second half goal from the penalty spot .
Will anyone ever be able to knock Len Smith back ? After retiring from the game at the end of last season he was pressed into service in the very first match of this season when he went as a spectator . Boldon were without a goalkeeper in that opening game at Silksworth and Len was pressed into service after signing a registration form only minutes before the kick - off .
He .d so well in this not - unacustomed position that from then on he became their recognised last line of defence until he broke his arm in October . Surely that must be the end ? Not for a man of Len's character . He came on as substitute at Hebburn last week .
