1915 visual shah sex blau'2 10 Shields Gazette , Monday , February 23 , 1976 SHIELDS WEMBLEY BID FAILS AT LEICESTER SOUTH SHIELDS on Saturday failed in their glorious bid to reach the Wembley final of the FA Challenge Vase when , despite the non - stop vocal encouragement of their three coach loads of supporters , they went down 2-0 to Friar Lane Old Boys in Leicestershire . OHN COLIN MADSEN Long trip affected Mariners Colin EXILED Shieldsman Madsen ( above ) , who moved to Leicester in 1962 , was at Saturday's Friar Lane 0B v South Shields FA Challenge Vase quarter final tie and he telephoned me yesterday to say : " I felt Shields would have to score three to win this game , and I was right inasmuch that they lost 2-0 , but they played well nevertheless . But I was surprised that the team travelled on the day of the match . I thought they might have made the long trip on the Friday and stayed overnight . " In fact before the game I was talking to Friar Lane's secretary , Bishop Auckland born Ken Jewitt , and he said to me : ' I reckon that the fact that Shields have been travelling all morning is worth a goal start to us in the first quarter of an hour ' . " He was right . although once the goal was a penalty . Yet Shields got the stiffness out of their legs , they dominated the last half hour of the first half . Ken also said to me that if the game was drawn , the replay would be played next Saturday and they would travel on the Friday and stay at overnight with a work out Seaburn on the Saturday morning . " Colin added : " What a pity Shields could not afford to have done the same for this game . I know the club is building itself up financially , but I am sure there would be around 20 people in Shields who would have willingly donated a fiver to help the club pay what would have been a hefty bill for an overnight stay . I would have done so . " In the Vase competition , if a team has to travel upwards of 200 miles they can claim expenses for an overnight stay , but Saturday's trip did not fall into this category . Colin did say how impressed he was with the turn - out of the Shields team , saying : ** They looked tremendously smart and were a credit to the town . I thought they did very well and expect them to go a lot further in the Vase next season . " But it was two defensive mistakes that cost the fifth time Shields this quarter - final match in six ties that the had been Mariners drawn away . Otherwise both goalkeepers had splendid games , home keeper Webb having rather more to do than his opposite number Stan Carig both teams created numerous scoring opportunities . For Shields , though , it was an uphill struggle from the word ' go ' as Friar Lane made full use of a fifth minute penalty . In Friar Lane's view the first 15 minutes was the time to take the advantage before the Mariners adjusted completely from their SO morning journey . And they did ! Full back Fitzpatrick crossed from the right high into the Shields area . There appeared to be no danger when Compton left the ground to head clear but instead his arm struck the ball and the referee had no choice but to award a penalty . Welford placed his shot to the right under Craig's diving body . DEVASTATING For Shields , so early in the match , this was a devastating blow but their supporters got behind them to try to help them lift their game and find the equaliser which would have been the 100th league and cup goal of the season . A chance came in the 15th minute when the ball was knocked back to Steve Hunter on the left 15 yards from goal . His first - time volley nearly caught Webb unawares at the near post but diving to his right , he finger - tipped the shot around the post for a corner . Craig , too , was tested , although not as severely , ten - as Jimmy Nolan is out for months ' Jimmy Nolan , 28 , fractured his leg for the second time this season when falling at Nottingham on Saturday and will be out of action for several months . Jimmy , stable jockey to Melton Mowbray trainer Walter Wharton , broke his leg on the first day of the jump season at Market Rasen in August . He returned to race riding earlier this month and had only five mounts when he fractured the same leg on Saturday . UNCLE BING WARMS UP AT WINCANTON Smart chaser Uncle Bing , winner of Newbury's Spring Chase earlier this month , will run in the Fairyland Handicap Chase Wincanton on Thursday before bidding to capture the Mildmay of Flete Challange Cup Chase at the Cheltenham Festival . Uncle Bing will be one of the three chasers the Mildmay - White family retain when they sell the majority of their race horses at the end of this jump season . at - Jarrow Fives and Threes JARROW Fives and Threes League matches to be played on Thursday , February 26 are First Division : Crown and Anchor A v Crown and Anchor B , P O Wales v Tunnel Tavern , Neon SC A V North Eastern , Deneside CC B vRobin Hood B , Greyhound Av The Bull B , St Bedes CC B v Cavalier Club . " V V minutes later when Conway hammered in a 20 - yard effort , Craig pulling the ball down from under the bar . Referee , Mr A. Dobson , of Blackburn , came under fire on the half hour for what seemed a dubious decision at a time when Shields were beginning to really come to grips with the game . Captain Billy Graham beat several defenders in the box before apparently being bundled to the ground . A great wave of quite legitimate protests ensued , but to no avail . This could have been the turning point as far as the Mariners were concerned , but instead within ten minutes they found themselves two behind . The Friar Lane forwards got behind the Shields defence , escaping the offside trap , and as the ball bounced wildly on the edge of the box it was the ' unlucky Jimmy Compton again who mis kicked his clearance . INCHES WIDE Elliot won the resulting heading duel and nodded the ball out to Marshall , totally unmarked on the left and 20 yards from goal . He fired in a terrific right foot volley which dipped into the top far corner over Craig . Shields , to their credit , and came , straight back within the minute Jimmy Robson flashed a shot inches the bar from long over range . The second half , unlike the first , was an evenly balanced affair , including another debatable decision by the referee on the hour , Hunter broke through the defence and found the net as he shot across Webb into the far corner . As he did so , however , the referee brought play back for a body check on Hunter as he went through . Graham , among others , protested at the lack of use of the advantage rule and consequently was booked . Webb was again in action , pushing a Kenny Parker shot over the bar after the ball took a deflection off one of his defenders , and in the final ten minutes the openings still appeared for both sides , but Shields ' fate had already been sealed . CUP TRIP The Mariners are on cup duty again this Saturday when they visit Carlisle City in the quarter finals of the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup . Supporters are still very much behind the Shields team and several inquiries have already been made concerning travel arrangements for Carlisle . Bookings must be made , as usual , by contacting the Adam and Eve Hotel or by 2731 telephoning South Shields 2731 .
