ONLY ALLIANCE TITLE LEFT FOR MARINERS
IN JUST TWO GAMES spanning only eight days , South Shields ' Northern Alliance dream of this season achieving triple success in League , League Cup and FA Vase , has been shattered .
For the Mariners there now only remains the Northern Alliance League Championship to aim at after the quarter final FA Challenge Vase defeat at Friar Lane , Leicester , and the latest blow , Saturday's 2-1 Northern Alliance Challenge Cup quarter - final defeat away to Carlisle City .
This , the worst sequence of results of the season so far , has coincided with a certain lapse of form and posed for Shields
manager Bobby Elwell problems of relatively alien nature .
a
In both league and cup , success has followed success but now in two consecutive ties it has all gone .
The reason for Saturday's disappointing result , however , is simple . On the day the Mariners were not good enough . Carlisle , by creating and what is more taking their chances , earned themselves a place in the semi finals at Percy Main .
-
But even before Carlisle took a 24th - minute lead Shields ' attempts to get their game together were hindered by three or four of what must be described as severe tackles on the part of the City players and the referee's consequent actions .
In the first 20 minutes , Kenny Parker , who hardly got a look in up front , Ray Young and Ritchie Madden , were all " chopped " and Mr K. Bowron , of Whickham , might have taken the initiative to bring the game completely under his control right from the start by cautioning the first offender before any player became incensed enough to retaliate . Young was later guilty of this and was sternly spoken to . But it was by no means an untidy match as far as physical challenges concerned .
are
From the start Shields were completely on the defensive and had some narrow squeaks .
City went ahead after 34 minutes from a move started
by Turnbull whose pass from the heart of defence found Hopper on the left wing . The had already pass beaten Jimmy McDonald for pace and Hopper went on towards the box before going outside Graham to pass from the by line .
He found the unmarked Armstrong who had only to touch the ball home from two yards .
Before half time , Young's shot was kept out by the advancing Jackson's feet
after Madden chipped into Young's path and Young had beaten centre back Chambers .
Alan Suggett found the net for Shields in the opening stages of the second half but was rightly judged to have punched the ball in .
City's second goal was a somewhat scrambled affair . A right wing cross after 75 minutes hit McDonald , the ball rebounding into Craig's arms . The keeper juggled with the ball before losing possession altogether and after several attempted clearances it fell to Hopper who volleyed fiercely into the roof of the net from only a yard .
a
Three minutes from time City gave away a free kick , just outside the box on the by - line . Robson took the kick , Rutherford knocked it back across the goal to Suggett who nodded down into the net to pull one back . Shields hardly had chance to grab a late equaliser when the referee blew for the end without , it seemed , playing very much injury time of which , if the number of stoppages and blatant time wasting on the part of Carlisle concerned , there was quite a lot .

There are no more cup competitions to think about and the league programme can be resumed with backlog of something like five games . Next week Shields have yet another away game when they visit Wallington .

FOOTBALLERS
Jennings ' Playe of the Year '
THE members of the Professional Footballers Associatio broke with recent tradition when they named Tottenham Pat Jennings their " Player of the Year " for 1975. The las two awards have gone to players whose sides were involved in chasing honours Colin Todd of Derby last year and Leeds ' Norman Hunter in 1973 .
Jennings , the quiet man of Tottenham , wins his award for consistency over a period of ten years , plus his fine form last season when almost single - handed he saved Spurs from relegation .
Jennings , born in Newry and winner of over 50 Northern Ireland caps , received his award from the Duke of Kent at the Hilton Hotel last night . Earlier this season Jennings set a new record for league appearances with Tottenham and is now well past the 400 mark .
Signed from . Watford by Bill Nicholson for £ 27,000 in 1964 Jennings must rate as one of the all time bargain buys .
Jennings ' rivals for the award were Lou Macari of Manchester United , Duncan McKenzie , of Leeds , Don Masson of Queen's Park Rangers , Archie Gemmill , of Derby and Liverpool's Kevin Keegan .
The young player of the year award went to Manchester City's 18 - year - old winger Peter Barnes , who only the day before had scored the opening goal in the League Cup final against Newcastle .

Mariners back in the old routine
BILLY GRAHAM'S THREE - TIMER
A DEVASTATING SECOND half performance , the complete opposite to what had gone before in the first 45 minutes , saw South Shields pull back a two - goal deficit and eventually cruise to a 5-2 Northern Alliance victory at Wallington on Saturday . who put
-
And it was captain Billy Graham he plundered a hat - trick in a 16 - minute spell Shields on the road to victory over a Wallington side that took full advantage of the two most clear
cut chances of the first half .
The game was played on a pitch that , although dry and firm , prevented the Mariners ' attempts at controlled football achieving any success because of its ' wave like ' surface , the ball bobbing on the " hills " and kicking off the " valleys . "
Wallington to their credit , employed the right tactics , before Shields could properly adjust their play . This put the onus very much on the defence , having to contend with viciously bouncing ball .
It was fully half an hour before Shields adopted an effective style , but by this stage they had fallen one goal behind , and it looked as the game was to be a continuation of last week's dismal performance at Carlisle City , even more so when Wallington scored their second .
Shields
still lead
the way
ALTHOUGH having missed wo Northern Alliance games n a row South Shields still etain the leadership of the able on goal average and , ith 11 matches remaining , eed 15 out of the possible 2 points to make sure of etaining the championship . Carlisle City , with games n hand ( as have Shields ) nd Marine Park , on the ame number of points as Shields , are their only erious threats but with a god run of results over Easter ( Good Friday Carlisle City away and Saturday Marine Park at home ) the title is Shields for the taking . Six minutes later O'Brien was again involved when his pass put Smith well away down the wing .
The referee ignored Shields ' offside appeals , and Smith went on to slip the ball past Craig from ten yards , the pace of the shot beating Freddie Carr and Rutherford , both sprinting back to save the goal .
DISAPPEARED
Ten minutes after the interval , though , Billy Graham notched his first . Ritchie Madden shot across the goal , the ball striking Jimmy Robson's feet in the six - yard box and falling to Graham eight yards out from where he hit the inside of the post as he scored .
After 59 minutes , from the same position , Graham beat a Alte le
