Shields avoid the double
PARKER GRABS LATE SAVER
DURHAM UNIVERSITY are in their first season as members of the Northern Alliance , but they have proved beyond any shadow of a doubt to be the best of the three ' college ' sides , but of more importance to league leaders South Shields is the fact that they have now established themselves as the Mariners ' bogey team .
In January Shields went to Durham as the only unbeaten side in the league and came away pointless . On Saturday in the return fixture at the Jack Clark Ground the University swept into an identical 2-0 lead , having again led by goal

BOLDON CW clinched place in the semi - final of the Wearside League Challenge Cup when they beat Eppleton 2-1 in extra time at Boldon on Saturday .
Although the first half was goalless , there was plenty of excitement . Scott should have put the home side ahead when he was clean through with only the keeper to beat but his final effort was well wide . Carmichael hit a great drive which was just off target and then Smith headed over the bar from a good position .

In the 40th minute the visitors were awarded a penalty but Gibson's spot hit the bar and rebounded into play . The second half was only minutes old when Buck put Eppleton in front with an easy chance from close in . The home side fought back and equalised in the 60th minute with a fine solo effort by defender Paul Hedley .
With the game going into extra time , the home side got the winner when a pass by Smith found Carmichael who rounded the advancing keeper and shot into the corner of the net .

successful second half redeployment of captain Billy Graham front , Shields manager Bobby Elwell perservered with the same tactics . However , this did not prove as effective . Even though in the first half hour three chances fell to Graham , the scoresheet remained blank .
Two minutes before taking a 36th minute lead , Durham were only kept out by the woodwork in a dramatic series of events . Daniels- dispossessed Freddie Carr in midfield and after a run of 20 yards in the Shields half shot from the 25 yard mark . Dick Patterson had come off his line and was only able to palm the ball into the underside of the bar . Durham's Graham raced in for the rebound but full back Jimmy McDonald just beat him to the ball and had to turn it away for a corner .

EQUALISER
But in 59 minutes Shields were back in the match when Jimmy Robson reduced the two - goal deficit .
Lyn Rutherford , coming in behind the defence , headed a Steve Hunter corner against the bar , but the ball fell to the feet of . Robson only a yard out and he easily touched it home . The equaliser , was left until the 89th minute . Ray Young crossed from the right and Kenny Parker , who had played all the second half in place of Ritchie Madden , cut in to hook the ball past Broughton , caught unawares . Broughton , the Durham ' keeper , was of the one Shields reasons found it difficult to score . Throughout the match Robson . in particular had shots pushed away for corners and shots held just under the bar . In fact , Broughton and his defence were involved again in the dying seconds and but for a defender on the line , Graham could have notched the winner .

MARINERS LOSE BUT THEY WERE OUT OF LUCK
AS SOUTH SHIELDS approach their crucial , congested April Northern Alli ance programme , which includes seven games in a 14 - day spell , their pos ition in the league table is becoming more and more unstable .
The last six matches have yielded only seven points , the three wins , one draw and two defeats constituting a disappointing run for the league champions . Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Seaham cost Shields the league leadership which has been theirs for most of the season and , with an Easter programme which takes in games against highly = placed Carlisle City and new leaders Marine Park in con'secutive days , the Mariners cannot afford to drop many more points if they are to retain their title without becoming involved in a late - season scramble .
an
Manager Bobby Elwell , who said he was looking for improved display at Seaham after a string of unimpressive performances , said after the game : " I thought we showed a lot of determination . I was happy at the way the lads played but I thought were unfortunate to lose . I felt sorry for them really .

" I've been getting on to them in the last few weeks , but at Seaham they started to put it together well . They just had bad luck with their finishing . At times it was unbelievable how we failed to score .
" We've played a lot worse and won 5-0 , so while we still have some way to go to reach our early season level , I think we are on the way back . I'm lot a more confident now as we begin a

Right from the start of the P W D L F A Pts second half Shields literally put Seaham on the rack but were unable to find the net . On several occasions the ball struck defenders , sortimes with their backs to the shot , before being cleared .

nine game run - in to the end of the season . " Indeed , throughout Saturday's game , misfortune Shields ' constant companion . The first 20 minutes had simply been , for both sides , a time to adapt to a swirling wind and uneven pitch . Then in the 25th minute , the Shields goal came under severe fire for the first time . Seaham twice hit the bar as they pressurised the defence but could not find the back of the net and the ball was eventually scrambled away . The referee , however , consulted the flag waving linesman and awarded penalty for what only could have been a possible handball by Freddie Carr as the first shot the woodwork .

There were no enthusiastic appeals for a penalty from the Red Star forwards and Carr himself was adamant he had not made contact with the ball .
