MEN'S NYLON QUILTED RALLY COATS £ 4.50 Black and navy . Sizes LEVI STAY - PRES . Sizes 28 to 40 waist . £ 2-25 For CLARKES - 45 Frederick Street GATESHEAD United , who accumulated riches in this town with the sale of Si monside Hall for a figure in the region of £ 269,000 , did not lend any verbal support to South Shields Mariners ' case for member ship of the Wearside League last night , writes Dick Kirkup . They were represented by chairman Mr Jack Leigh ton , director Mr Sam Blackstone and general manager Charlie Mr Thomas . I felt that some one would give support in vew of the fact that their move to Gateshead had been financed by the sale of Simonside Hall which in the first place , had been bought for £ 10,000 by hard working men of South Shields . South Shields Mariners bid GATESHEAD for Wearside League place fails UNITED REMAINED SILENT Mr Thomas , a member of the FA Council and a man who holds a host of ap pointments with numerous leagues and associations in the North - East , could have added considerable weight to the applicaton with a few words , particularly in view of his long and dedi cated association with foot ball in the town and also the Wearside League . But the only verbal support he gave was for the appli caton of Whckham . It was sad to see men from South Shields remaining silent as their town's new club was rejected by a league that their town has supported with credit for many years . I was left wondering if their silence reflected their con cern over a possible weekly ticket war in the town . For Gateshead United are still selling their former South Shields AFC ticket in the town with South Shields Mari : ners in direct opposition with theirs . The new Mari : ners scheme is growing steadily and one would assume that the more tickets the Mariners sell the greater will be the loss to Gateshead United . If there were no South Shields Mariners , Gateshead United's problems would be solved . But whatever the reason for Gateshead United's silence last night , they will be re membered for it . I understand that the move to request Gateshead United to leave behind the that originally £ 10,000 bought Simonside Hall will be renewed when South Shields Mariners gain membership of a league . " We have worked hard to get the new club and the weekly ticket scheme going , and we will fight on . I can tell all soccer followers in the town that we WILL be in a league next season . We may be back at square one , but we will fight our way up just like old South Shields Adelaide did . They started from nothing , and their spirit will live on . There's a lot of fight left in us - and we'll win through . " By DICK KIRKUP THE NEW South Shields Mariners Football Club failed last night in its bid for membership of the Wearside League ... but they will battle on until they DO find a league . Club chairman Mr Martin Ford and his officials were clearly deeply disappointed after their appli cation had been rejected at the Wearside League's annual meeting in Sun derland Accident and Orthopaedic Hospital last night , but Mr Ford stated : " This is dis very appointing . It is a blow , there's no getting away from that , but we are all deter mined to overcome it . It is a setback , but football will not die here in South Shields . Manager Bobby Elwell said : " I can hardly believe that the Wearside League have done this to South Shields . But I'm not packing in . I'm more determined than ever to get a team for the town what ever league we play in . " HEATED MEETING Last night's meeting got off to a heated start with chairman Mr Bob Wood having to repeatedly bring the meeting to order . The first argument broke over the number of teams in the league , and it was finally de cided on 20 with an 11-9 vote , after the checking of a first vote had been ques tioned from the floor . Then a member pointed out that there was no team in the league called Gates head United Reserves whereupon Gateshead United general manager Mr Charlie Thomas angrily stated that South Shields Reserves had United become Gateshead Reserves with the club's change of name . More argu ments flared with apologies being demanded , and once again Mr Wood had to call for order . Shields Gazette and Shipping Telegraph Ryhope CW were re - elected to the league which left two vacancies , and these were filled by Whickham and Ep pleton CW . Acting secretary of South Shields Mariners Mr Ian Joyce his presented club's case well , but when the result of the ballot was announced , Whickham and Eppleton were convincingly elected . The voting figures were : Whickham 19 votes , Epple ton 18 , South Shields Mari ners four , Ryhope C A two and Sunderland Pyrex one . My inquiries before the meeting started left me in no doubt that it had already been decided that Whickham and Eppleton would be elec ted , Wednesday , June 12 , 1974 WHAT THE POOLS PAY LITTLEWOODS Treble Chance : 24 pts £ 2,161 ; 23 pts £ 83.20 ; 221 pts £ 8.45 ; 22 pts £ 14.60 ; 21 pts £ 1.85 ; 21 pts 30p . United put up fences V INDIANS AT OXFORD INDIANS 1st inings 106-4 ( Bose 66 ) . MANCHESTER United have already erected fences to keep their fans off the pitch The at Old Trafford . members of the FA Dis ciplinary Committee , who vi sited Manchester today to consider charges against the club resulting from crowd misconduct on April 27 , saw two examples of fencing that has been put up behind one of the goals . One consisted of two - inch square wire netting , with inward turned spikes , totall ing more than seven feet high and the other , a foot higher , of iron bars with a more pronounced inward curve at the top . The committee was ex pected to go straight to the Granada Television studios , to see films of the match bet ween Manchester United and Manchester City , which was abandoned after two mass in vasions of the pitch by spectators . KNIFE INCIDENT United , charged under FA rule 38a , face a heavy fine or ground closure for the second time in three years . In 1971 , Old Trafford was closed for a fortnight follow ing an alleged knife throw ing incident and United played " home " matches at Li verpool and Stoke . Their spectators have a long history of trouble and in 1969 the European FA or dered them to erect a wire fence behind the goals after the Milan goalkeeper was struck by a missile . The Football League has already awarded the points for the abandoned game to Manchester City and United , having finished 21st . in the League , have been relegated to the Second Division . Their opening home fixtures are against Millwall , Portsmouth , Nottingham Forest and Bris tol City .
