Bobby Elwell's new Mariners look good
by Dick Kirkup
TWO WEEKS tomorrow the new South Shields Mariners resume the town's one - time association with the 94 - year - old Northern Alliance — and their preparations could hardly be more thorough .
eye of manager Bobby Elwell , this club that has
Under the demanding literally grown from nothing in a few short months is confidently taking shape .
During his spells as skip per and then player - man ager wh the old South Shields FC , Bobby always asked a lot of his players and his reasons for con tinuing that policy now are exactly the same as they were then .
Ask him why , and he replies : " Bese the town of South Shields deserves a good side . I'll do all in my power to give it one , and I want my players to know they've got a great town to play for . I want them to have pride in the town and give 100 per cent every second thou are on the field . "
Useful pool
I stood in on their work outs this week and Elwell is assembling a useful pool of players and that was a difficult task in itself , re membering the club didn't .

Alliance on look - out for linesmen
Because of the addition to the Northern Alliance of Durham sides , Alliance secretary Jim McKay is short of qualified referees to accept line appoint ments .
He will welcome applica tions from Class II or Class III officials willing to ac cept linesmen's appoint ments at South Shields , Seaham and Boldon ( for Greenwells ) .
Anyone interested is in vited to write to him at 3 Cottinglea , Morpeth , giving their vacant dates . Says Mr Mackay : " We have some outstanding referees in the Northern Alliance and line appointments would provide excellent experi . ence for young officials . "
Shields Gazette , Friday , August 2 , 1974-15
have a gue to play in until the middle of June when Bobby had to start building a playing staff from scratch .
In training this week were several familiar faces , ex - South Shields FC players Jimmy Compton Billy Graham , Eric Johns tone , Lyn Rutherford and Ritchie Madden . Compton , a proven defensive strong man , played well alongside Jimmy McFarlane who , like Billy Graham , played for the successful Blue Star side in the Wearside League last season . McFarlane , like Graham , reads the game superbly and has seen service with many clubs including Ash ington , Blue Star and Alnwick . This tall , elegant player looks like being a tremendous asset to the club .
In goalkeeper Dick Pat terson Elwell has found a safe last line of defence . He has been with Blyth , Evenwood , Washington
and Marine Park and this
week he looked extremely good .
I also liked the look of 18 - year - old midfield player Keith McDonald who was with Ferryhill last season . He really buzzes , rather like Gerry Donoghue who has been training with the Shields players . Striker Jimmy Robson , who wears glasses off the field and contact lenses when play ing , is a strong , forceful player who had a three year spell with Birming ham City straight from school .
He an England schoolboy trialist and played for South North umberland Boys and the full Northumberland County side . Last season he was with North Shields and Wallsend and Elwell has great faith in his fi nishing . Certainly in this week's work - out he looked sharp and caused us to blink with a whiplash of a goal on the volley .
Another player who took my eye was full back Arthur Wardale , of South Shields , whose speed takes him overlapping down the line . His tackling is posi tive to say the least .
Because the club does not get the use of the Jack Clark Memorial Park until August 17 , the opening day of the season , all the train ing is taking place at the superbly appointed sports ground of Wallsend firm of George Angus and Co. Ltd. , where Elwell works .

On an historic note , South Shields Reserves won the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup in 1937-38 and lost to Morpeth in the final the fol lowing year . They never won the champoinship , but Heb burn Argyle took the title in 1896-97 and Jarrow in 1898 99 .
